Evolution: Good Males Are Bad Females
نویسندگان
چکیده
Manipulation of Drosophila melanogaster genomes allows large numbers of genes to be transmitted solely through males, thereby allowing selection to optimize flies for male function alone. It seems biasing phenotypes toward the male optima has serious fitness costs for females.

Evolution: Do Bad Husbands Make Good Fathers?
Males sometimes harm their mates as they seek to maximise the number of offspring they sire. But are females really suffering or do the benefits of having sons that inherit their father's manipulative traits make up for the costs? Three recent studies provide the first hard data addressing this issue, but they differ in their conclusions.

The relationship between seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and subjective quality of sleep/wake cycle in adolescents was explored. The Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (SPAQ-CA) and Mini Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ) were administered to 345 adolescents living in the city of Cesena (Emilia-Romagna region, Italy) (299 females; age range: 14-18 years), to determi...
متن کاملThe coevolution of sexual imprinting by males and females
Sexual imprinting is the learning of a mate preference by direct observation of the phenotype of another member of the population. Sexual imprinting can be paternal, maternal, or oblique if individuals learn to prefer the phenotypes of their fathers, mothers, or other members of the population, respectively. Which phenotypes are learned can affect trait evolution and speciation rates. "Good gen...
متن کاملEvolution of female choice and age-dependent male traits with paternal germ-line mutation
Several studies question the adaptive value of female preferences for older males. Theory and evidence show that older males carry more deleterious mutations in their sperm than younger males carry. These mutations are not visible to females choosing mates. Germ-line mutations could oppose preferences for “good genes.” Choosy females run the risk that offspring of older males will be no more at...
متن کاملOn subalgebras of an evolution algebra of a "chicken" population
We consider an evolution algebra which corresponds to a bisexual population with a set of females partitioned into finitely many different types and the males having only one type. For such algebras in terms of its structure constants we calculate right and plenary periods of generator elements. Some results on subalgebras of EACP and ideals on low-dimensional EACP are obtained.
