Moment-Matching Polynomials

چکیده
We give a new framework for proving the existence of low-degree, polynomial approximators for Boolean functions with respect to broad classes of non-product distributions. Our proofs use techniques related to the classical moment problem and deviate significantly from known Fourier-based methods, which require the underlying distribution to have some product structure. Our main application is the first polynomial-time algorithm for agnostically learning any function of a constant number of halfspaces with respect to any log-concave distribution (for any constant accuracy parameter). This result was not known even for the case of learning the intersection of two halfspaces without noise. Additionally, we show that in the smoothedanalysis setting, the above results hold with respect to distributions that have sub-exponential tails, a property satisfied by many natural and well-studied distributions in machine learning. Given that our algorithms can be implemented using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) with a polynomial kernel, these results give a rigorous theoretical explanation as to why many kernel methods work so well in practice.

Some new families of definite polynomials and the composition conjectures
The planar polynomial vector fields with a center at the origin can be written as an scalar differential equation, for example Abel equation. If the coefficients of an Abel equation satisfy the composition condition, then the Abel equation has a center at the origin. Also the composition condition is sufficient for vanishing the first order moments of the coefficients. The composition conjectur...
متن کاملMoment Matching Model Order Reduction in Time-Domain Via Laguerre Series
A new time-domain model order reduction method based on the Laguerre function expansion of the impulse response is presented. The Laguerre coefficients of the impulse response of the reduced-order model, which is calculated using a projection whose matrices form basis of appropriate Krylov subspaces, match, up to a given order, those of the original system. In addition, it is shown that the obt...
متن کاملOrthogonal Polynomial Density Estimates: Alternative Representation and Degree Selection
The density estimates considered in this paper comprise a base density and an adjustment component consisting of a linear combination of orthogonal polynomials. It is shown that, in the context of density approximation, the coefficients of the linear combination can be determined either from a moment-matching technique or a weighted least-squares approach. A kernel representation of the corresp...
متن کاملA New Method of Order Reduction for High Order Interval Systems Using Least Squares Method
The paper presents the application of Least Squares moment matching method about a general point „a‟ for the reduction of high order Interval systems. A heuristic criteria have been employed for selecting the linear shift point „a‟ based upon the harmonic mean of real parts of the poles of four high order fixed systems obtained by Kharitonov‟s Theorem. The denominator polynomials are obtained b...

We consider the problem of estimating the support size of a discrete distribution whose minimum non-zero mass is at least 1 k using independent samples. We show that the minimax sample complexity to achieve an additive error of k with probability at least 0.5 is within universal constant factors of k log k log 2 1 , which improves the state-of-the-art result k 2 log k due to Valiant and Valiant...
متن کاملMultivariate Orthogonal Polynomials and Modified Moment Functionals
Multivariate orthogonal polynomials can be introduced by using a moment functional defined on the linear space of polynomials in several variables with real coefficients. We study the so-called Uvarov and Christoffel modifications obtained by adding to the moment functional a finite set of mass points, or by multiplying it times a polynomial of total degree 2, respectively. Orthogonal polynomia...
