Microbial Antagonisms and Antibiotic Substances

alone and together, upon total heat production of normal rabbits, thryroidectomized rabbits, and thyroidectomized rabbits treated with thyroxin. Data so obtained were then supplemented with results of clinical studies, and from the whole, conclusions were drawn which are convincing, both because of the straightforward nature of the experiments themselves and the logical, orderly manner in which they are presented. The phenomena dealt with here in particular, the metabolic actions of epinephrine, its relation to thyroid activity, and interrelationships between hormones and vitamins-have all claimed the attention of American investigators within recent years. Consequendy, this little monograph will interest those who study endocrine physiology and nutrition, as well as physicians who care for patients with hyperthyroidism. JOHN R. BROBECK

A bacterial reporter panel for the detection and classification of antibiotic substances
The ever-growing use of pharmaceutical compounds, including antibacterial substances, poses a substantial pollution load on the environment. Such compounds can compromise water quality, contaminate soils, livestock and crops, enhance resistance of microorganisms to antibiotic substances, and hamper human health. We report the construction of a novel panel of genetically engineered Escherichia c...
متن کاملPlasmid-mediated susceptibility to intestinal microbial antagonisms in Escherichia coli.
Self-transferable plasmid pIP1100 confers to Escherichia coli an unusually high level of resistance (1 to 2 mg/ml) to erythromycin by production of an erythromycin esterase. The effect of pIP1100 on the destiny of E. coli strains in the intestines of gnotobiotic mice was studied. In germfree mice, pIP1100 was efficiently transferred to a plasmid-free E. coli recipient. Intestinal counts of the ...
متن کاملAntibiotic Stress Selects against Cooperation in a Pathogenic Bacterium
Ecological antagonisms such as predation, parasitism, competition, and abiotic environmental stress play key roles in shaping population biology, in particular by inducing stress responses and selecting for tolerant or resistant phenotypes. Little is known, however, about their impact on social traits, such as the production of public goods. Evolutionary trade-off theory predicts that adaptatio...
متن کاملStrategies and molecular tools to fight antimicrobial resistance: resistome, transcriptome, and antimicrobial peptides
The increasing number of antibiotic resistant bacteria motivates prospective research toward discovery of new antimicrobial active substances. There are, however, controversies concerning the cost-effectiveness of such research with regards to the description of new substances with novel cellular interactions, or description of new uses of existing substances to overcome resistance. Although ex...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Urotest AB antibacterial substance detection test.
The Urotest AB was used to detect antimicrobial substances in urine samples. Of 1022 urine specimens evaluated, Urotest AB detected inhibitors in 38.9%. Of 159 urine specimens from patients thought to be taking an antibiotic, inhibitors were detected in 80.5%. This test may help to explain culture negative urine samples from symptomatic patients, and could help elucidate treatment failures and ...
