Situated Learning in Autonomous Agents

چکیده
In Chapter 17 we started the discussion about autonomous agents as part of the situated cognition approach in AI, and we develop this further here focussing on learning. An agent is autonomous when it is able to function on its own in a complex and changing environment. We will call an agent adaptive when, in addition, it is able to improve its behaviour to make it (more) appropriate for its environment and task. Through interactions with the environment, the agent learns to improve its behaviour on the basis of its own appraisal of the perceived external or internal effects of its actions. We will thus focus on learning as a form of adaptation, where learning is an integral part of the agent's behaviour that cannot be disconnected from its performance, as opposed to a separate cognitive function that can be studied and modelled on a stand-alone basis.

A View on the Architecture and Design of Highly Autonomous and Situated Agents
The architecture and design process of a highly autonomous, situated agent is described. The architecture consists of a population of agents which are designed in an incremental, bottom-up fashion according to what we call a behavioural engineering approach. The agents operate in parallel and have a close coupling between perception and action. Emergent behaviour and memory-based learning deter...
متن کاملMachine Learning for Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
In order to be truly autonomous, agents need the ability to learn from and adapt to the environment and other agents. This chapter introduces key concepts of machine learning and how they apply to agent and multi-agent systems. Rather than present a comprehensive survey, we discuss a number of issues that we believe are important in the design of learning agents and multi-agent systems. Specifi...
متن کاملCollective Learning and Semiotic Dynamics
Abstract. We report on a case study in the emergence of a lexicon in a group of autonomous distributed agents situated and grounded in an open environment. Because the agents are autonomous, grounded, and situated, the possible words and possible meanings are not fixed but continuously change as the agents autonomously evolve their communication system and adapt it to novel situations. The case...
متن کاملAn Architecture for Emotion
The addition of emotions may be the key to producing rational behavior in autonomous agents. For situated agents, a different perspective on learning is proposed which relies on the agent’s ability to react in an emotional way to its dynamically changing environment. Here an architecture of mind is presented with the ability to display adaptive emotional states of varying types and intensities,...
متن کاملImmune System Modelling with Situated Cellular Agents
The Immune System (IS) constitutes the defence mechanism of higher level organisms to micro organismic threats. It is genuinely distributed system comprising mechanisms of adaptation to unknown threats by means of the cooperation of heterogenous autonomous entities, whose interaction endows the overall system with learning capabilities. This paper describes how a Multi Agent approach, and more ...
