Towards the Estimation of Non-Uniform Illumination in Real-World Scenes

چکیده
In a raw photographic image, the observed colors are a mixture of material reflectance and colored illumination. For further processing, the color influence of the light source is often considered a disturbance. In such cases, it is desireable to neutralize the color of the light source, often referred to as white balancing. Successful white balancing often requires an estimate of the color of the light source. Most existing illuminant color estimators assume homogeneous, globally uniform illumination. However, this assumption is often violated in real-world images. In this work, we make an attempt towards estimating the colors and spatial distributions of multiple light sources in a scene. We estimate the color of the illumination locally, and define an objective function to select two or three representative illuminants from all local estimates. Although the objective function is relatively simple, qualitative results look promising.

Artist's colour rendering of HDR scenes in 3D Mondrian colour-constancy experiments
The presentation provides an update on ongoing research using three-dimensional Colour Mondrians. Two still life arrangements comprising hand-painted coloured blocks of 11 different colours were subjected to two different lighting conditions of a nearly uniform light and directed spotlights. The three-dimensional nature of these test targets adds shadows and multiple reflections, not found in f...

In video telephone scenes to be transmitted at low data rates non–diffuse scene illumination has to be expected. In this contribution, non–diffuse scene illumination and 3D object motion is estimated concurrently from a monocular image sequence. Image analysis uses the source model ”3D rigid moving objects with non–diffuse illumination”. The illumination is modeled by a distant point light sour...

In background subtraction, the maintenance of significant backgrounds is very critical under various scene changes. In this paper, we propose a background maintenance method for dynamic scenes including global intensity level changes caused by the changes of illumination conditions and camera settings. If global intensity level changes abruptly, the conventional background model cannot discrimi...

We present a new approach to reflectance estimation for dynamic scenes. Non-parametric image statistics are used to transfer reflectance properties from a static example set to a dynamic image sequence. The approach allows reflectance estimation for surface materials with inhomogeneous appearance, such as those which commonly occur with patterned or textured clothing. Material reflectance prope...
