Comparison of the percolative nature of MIT in two-dimensional polycrystalline VO 2 thin fi lms or VO 2 nanoplatelets, [ 1 , 2 ] and one-dimensional VO 2 morphology, especially on the nanometer-scale, is fi nding its way into functional device applications owing to its single-crystal structure with homogeneous phase and dislocation-free volume along with homogeneous domains. These structural characteristics account for the occurrence of MIT over a much narrower temperature range. [ 3 , 4 ]

Self-heating and external strain coupling induced phase transition of VO₂ nanobeam as single domain switch.
Besides by temperature, this transition can also be driven by manipulation of various external stimuli, such as pressure, metal doping, photo-carrier injection and electric fi eld, which have a profound effect on the phase transition. However, to date most works have been carried out based on epitaxial thin fi lms or bulk crystals, in which the spatially inhomogeneous polycrystalline domains, l...
متن کاملStrain-induced self organization of metal-insulator domains in single-crystalline VO2 nanobeams.
We investigated the effect of substrate-induced strain on the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in single-crystalline VO(2) nanobeams. A simple nanobeam-substrate adhesion leads to uniaxial strain along the nanobeam length because of the nanobeam's unique morphology. The strain changes the relative stability of the metal (M) and insulator (I) phases and leads to spontaneous formation of periodic...
متن کاملDynamically tracking the strain across the metal-insulator transition in VO2 measured using electromechanical resonators.
We study the strain state of doubly clamped VO2 nanobeam devices by dynamically probing resonant frequency of the nanoscale electromechanical device across the metal-insulator transition. Simultaneous resistance and resonance measurements indicate M1-M2 phase transition in the insulating state with a drop in resonant frequency concomitant with an increase in resistance. The resonant frequency i...

Correlated electron materials can undergo a variety of phase transitions, including superconductivity, the metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. Moreover, multiple physical phases or domains with dimensions of nanometres to micrometres can coexist in these materials at temperatures where a pure phase is expected. Making use of the properties of correlated electron materials...
متن کاملIntrinsic optical properties of vanadium dioxide near the insulator-metal transition.
We studied the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in single-domain, single crystalline vanadium dioxide (VO(2)) microbeams with infrared microspectroscopy. The unique nature of such samples allowed us to probe the intrinsic behavior of both insulating and metallic phases in the close vicinity of IMT, and investigate the IMT driven by either strain or temperature independently. We found that the V...
