چکیده

Dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (DECT) is a technique which is designed to allow the determination of energy-independent material properties. In this study, results of a computer simulation show that energy-dependent systematic errors exist in the values of attenuation coefficients synthesized using the basis material decomposition technique with acrylic and aluminum as the basis materials, especially when a high atomic number element such as iodine (e.g., from radiographic contrast media) is present in the body. The errors are reduced when an acrylic and an iodine-water mixture are used as the basis materials. We propose a simple theoretical model for the calculation of energy-dependent systematic errors using effective energies at the lower and higher energy windows of the X-ray spectrum used in the DECT system. The calculated errors agree well with the errors observed in the simulation. These results suggest that the observed systematic errors are predominantly due to the energy dependence of the basis material coefficients.

Comparison of Bone Mineral Density Measured by Dual X-ray, Axial Dual-energy Photon X-ray Absorptiometry and Laser Absorptiometry of Calcaneus

The objective of this study was to validate the use of bone mineral measurements of the calcaneus bone by dual X-ray and laser (DXL) in a cross-sectional study carried out in an osteoporosis clinic. Measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur and spine were obtained by dual-energy photon X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Osteoporosis was defined by a DEXA T-score <-2.5 at the femora...

A novel dual energy CT-based attenuation correction method in PET/CT systems: A phantom study

In present PET/CT scanners, PET attenuation correction is performed by relying on the information given by CT scan. In the CT-based attenuation correction methods, dual-energy technique (DECT) is the most accurate approach, which has been limited due to the increasing patient dose. In this feasibility study, we have introduced a new method that can implement dual-en...

Measuring leg muscle and fat mass in humans: comparison of CT and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is reported to be inferior to computed tomography (CT) to measure changes in appendicular soft tissue composition. We compared CT- and DEXA-measured thigh muscle and fat mass to evaluate the random and systematic discrepancies between these two methods. Thigh skeletal muscle area (single-slice CT) was suboptimally (r(2) = 0.74, P < 0.0001) related to DEXA...

Investigation and Measurement of Ash Content of Coal in Zirab Coal Mine-Iran Using Dual Energy -Ray and X-Ray Fluorescence Methods

Coal with low ash content has an important role in the coal and steel industry. There are different methods to measure the ash content. The conventional method which is used in most coal mines of Iran, is to burn the coal and measure the remaining ash. A new method has been recently developed at Nuclear Research Center (NRC) of Iran, Which works on the basis of the absorption of the dual en...

Dual energy computed tomography for explosive detection

Single energy computed tomography (CT) scanners use measurements of densities to detect explosives in luggage. It is desirable to apply dual energy techniques to these CT scanners to obtain atomic number measurements to reduce false alarm rates. However, the direct application of existing dual energy techniques has practical problems, such as, approximation errors and lack of boundary constrain...
