Sdss Survey for Resolved Milky Way Satellite Galaxies Ii: High-velocity Clouds in the Early Data Release

چکیده
In this paper, we limit the stellar content of 13 high-velocity clouds (HVCs; including 1 compact HVC) using the detection limits of a new survey for resolved Milky Way satellite galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (EDR). Our analysis is sensitive to stellar associations within the virial radius of the Milky Way that are up to 50× fainter than the faintest known Milky Way satellites. Statistically, we find no stellar overdensity associated with any of the clouds. These non-detections suggest lower limits of MHI/LV that range between ∼ 0.2 and 250, assuming cloud distances of 50 and 300 kpc and using fiducial optical scale lengths of 3 and 7. We explore the implication of these non-detections on the origin of the HVCs. Subject headings: galaxies: intergalactic medium — galaxies: formation — galaxies: dwarfs — Local Group: surveys .

Statistics of Satellite Galaxies around Milky Way-like Hosts
We calculate the probability that a Milky-Way-like halo in the standard cosmological model has the observed number of Magellanic Clouds (MCs). The statistics of the number of MCs in the ΛCDM model are in good agreement with observations of a large sample of SDSS galaxies. Under the sub-halo abundance matching assumption of a relationship with small scatter between galaxy r-band luminosities and...

We present the results of a Parkes Multibeam HI survey of six loose groups of galaxies analogous to the Local Group. This survey was sensitive to HI-rich objects in these groups to below 10M⊙ of HI, and was designed to search for low mass, gas-rich satellite galaxies and potential analogs to the high-velocity clouds seen around the Milky Way. This survey detected a total of 79 HIrich objects as...
متن کاملHI and Galaxy Formation in Loose Groups
Models of hierarchical galaxy formation predict that large numbers of low-mass, dark matter halos remain around galaxies today. These models predict an order of magnitude more halos than observed stellar satellites in the Local Group. One possible solution to this discrepancy is that the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) around the Milky Way may be associated with the excess dark matter halos and be ...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Function of the Milky Way Satellites
We quantify the algorithmic detectability of stellar Milky Way satellites in data release 5 (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and use this to estimate the luminosity function of faint satellite galaxies in our halo. We develop a satellite detection algorithm based on the convolution of the DR5 star catalog with a kernel of zero net flux that is the difference of a narrow positive Ga...
متن کاملLuminosity dependence of the spatial and velocity distributions of galaxies: Semi-analytic models versus the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
By comparing semi-analytic galaxy catalogues with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we show that current galaxy formation models reproduce qualitatively the dependence of galaxy clustering and pairwise peculiar velocities on luminosity, but some subtle discrepancies with the data still remain. The comparisons are carried out by constructing a large set of mock galaxy redshift surve...
