چکیده

A comparison was made between two approaches to predict acoustic emission waveforms in thin plates. A normal mode solution method for Mindlin plate theory was used to predict the response of the flexural plate mode to a point source, step-function load, applied on the plate surface. The second approach used a dynamic finite element method to model the problem using equations of motion based on exact linear elasticity. Calculations were made using properties for both isotropic (aluminum) and anisotropic (unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite) materials. For simulations of anisotropic plates, propagation along multiple directions was evaluated. In general, agreement between the two theoretical approaches was good. Discrepancies in the waveforms at longer times were caused by differences in reflections from the lateral plate boundaries. These differences resulted from the fact that the two methods used different boundary conditions. At shorter times in the signals, before reflections, the slight discrepancies in the waveforms were attributed to https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20040086809 2017-09-08T04:53:04+00:00Z

Modeling of Acoustic Emission Signal Propagation in Waveguides

Acoustic emission (AE) testing is a widely used nondestructive testing (NDT) method to investigate material failure. When environmental conditions are harmful for the operation of the sensors, waveguides are typically mounted in between the inspected structure and the sensor. Such waveguides can be built from different materials or have different designs in accordance with the experimental need...

Finite Element Prediction of the Behavior of Profiled Steel Sheet Dry Board Folded Plate Structures an Improved Model (RESEARCH NOTE)

This paper describes an alternative finite element model that would yield more accurate results in the prediction of the behavior of Profiled Steel Sheet Dry Board (PSSDB) folded plate structures, which can be considered as an improvement of an earlier proposed model. The PSSDB folded plate structures are being proposed as an alternative to traditional forms of roof construction. The PSSDB syste...

A New Numerical Procedure for Determination of Effective Elastic Constants in Unidirectional Composite Plates

In this paper a composite plate with similar unidirectional fibers is considered. Assuming orthotropic structure, theory of elasticity is used for investigating the stress concentration. Also, complex variable functions are utilized for solving the plane stress problems. Then the effective characteristics of this plate are studied numerically by using ANSYS software. In this research a volume e...

New DKFT Elements for the Finite Element Analysis of Thin Viscoelastic Plates

In this paper, finite element analysis of thin viscoelastic plates is performed by proposing new plate elements using complex Fourier shape functions. New discrete Kirchhoff Fourier Theory (DKFT) plate elements are constructed by the enrichment of quadratic function fields in a six-noded triangular plate element with complex Fourier radial basis functions. In order to illustrate the validity...
