چکیده

Compacted unbound granular materials are extensively used as sub-layer in pavement design. Most pavement design guides assume that they are responsible for the degradation and deformation of the roads and railways that they support. Biaxial tests are usually employed to investigate the elasto-plastic response of these materials to cyclic loading. A particularly interesting question is whether a limit load exists, below which the excita-tions shake down, in the sense that the material does not accumulate further deformations. We have carried out a detailed study of the elasto-plastic behavior of a simple model of unbound granular matter submitted to cyclic loading. The dissipated energy through out the simulation has been used for the characterization of the different regimes of responses. 1 Introduction. Traditional pavement design methods are still almost completely empirical. Long term experience with the performance of on-service roads is supplemented with the results obtained from especially constructed test pavements. Changes in material properties, the loading or the environmental conditions can be hardly investigated. The information obtained from the experiments is therefore limited. The disadvantages of traditional design have become more obvious during the last decades as a consequence of the growth of transportation needs and the urge for using recycled materials. Mechanistic and analytical design procedures have consequently been developed based on the analysis of the response of the structure under specific loads. Understanding the behavior of the components of the structure is of course a prerequisite of this approach.

Effects of Aggregate Gradation on Resilient Modulus and CBR in Unbound Granular Materials

Resilient modulus and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) in unbound granular materials are the key technical characteristics of layers in a flexible pavement design. Among the factors affecting these two parameters, the aggregate gradation is the most important. Using particle size distribution curve developed by AASHTO, together with other considerations mentioned in the related regulations have y...

Numerical simulation of granular materials behaviour for unbound base layers used in Algerian pavement structures

Structural analysis of flexible pavements has been and still is currently performed using a multi-layer elastic theory. However, for thinly surfaced pavements subjected to light to medium volumes of traffic, the importance of non-linear stress-strain behaviour of unbound granular materials (UGM’s) requires the use of more sophisticated numerical models for structural design and analysis of such...

Interface roughness effect on slow cyclic annular shear of granular materials

We experimentally investigate the mechanical behaviour in cyclic shear of a granular material near a solid wall in a pressure controlled annular shear cell. The use of a model system (glass beads and sawtooth shaped solid surface) enables the study of the influence of the wall roughness. After an initial shakedown procedure ensuring reproducible results in subsequent tests, wall shear stress S,...

Shape Optimization of Elasto-plastic Structures with Shakedown Constraints

An integrated approach for all necessary variations within direct analysis, variational design sensitivity analysis and shakedown analysis based on Melan’s static shakedown theorem for linear unlimited kinematic hardening material behavior is formulated. Remarks on the computer implementation and numerical examples show the efficiency of the proposed formulation. Important effects of shakedown ...

A New model of Equivalent Modulus Derived from Repeated Load CBR Test

This paper presents a new model of equivalent modulus derived from the Repeated Load CBR (RL-CBR) test without strain gauge. This model is an updated version of Araya et al. model (2011), the update consists of using the vertical strain as weighting factor instead of vertical displacement in the mean vertical and horizontal stresses calculation. The accuracy of equivalent modulus was improved b...
