Short proofs of classical theorems

چکیده
We give proofs of Ore’s theorem on Hamilton circuits, Brooks’ theorem on vertex coloring, and Vizing’s theorem on edge coloring, as well as the Chvátal-Lovász theorem on semi-kernels, a theorem of Lu on spanning arborescences of tournaments, and a theorem of Gutin on diameters of orientations of graphs. These proofs, while not radically different from existing ones, are perhaps simpler and more natural. 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 44: 159–165, 2003

Arrow theorems in the fuzzy setting
Throughout this paper, our main idea is to analyze the Arrovian approach in a fuzzy context, paying attention to different extensions of the classical Arrow's model arising in mathematical Social Choice to aggregate preferences that the agents define on a set of alternatives. There is a wide set of extensions. Some of them give rise to an impossibility theorem as in the Arrovian classical mod...
متن کاملThe Seidel, Stern, Stolz and Van Vleck Theorems on continued fractions
The usual proofs of these three classical theorems are based on the sequences bn, An and Bn, where Zn = An/Bn, and the three-term recurrence relations for An and Bn. Our aim is to unify and generalise these results by giving new, geometric, proofs (apart from the elementary monotonicity statement, and subsequent convergence, in Theorem 1.1). First, however, we restate these three results (again...
متن کاملTangle-tree duality: in graphs, matroids and beyond⇤
We apply a recent duality theorem for tangles in abstract separation systems to derive tangle-type duality theorems for width-parameters in graphs and matroids. We further derive a duality theorem for the existence of clusters in large data sets. Our applications to graphs include new, tangle-type, duality theorems for tree-width, path-width, and tree-decompositions of small adhesion. Conversel...
متن کاملOn the pointfree counterpart of the local definition of classical continuous maps
The familiar classical result that a continuous map from a space $X$ to a space $Y$ can be defined by giving continuous maps $varphi_U: U to Y$ on each member $U$ of an open cover ${mathfrak C}$ of $X$ such that $varphi_Umid U cap V = varphi_V mid U cap V$ for all $U,V in {mathfrak C}$ was recently shown to have an exact analogue in pointfree topology, and the same was done for the familiar cla...
متن کاملSome Lemmas to Hopefully Enable Search Methods to Find Short and Human Readable Proofs for Incidence Theorems of Projective Geometry
Search methods provide short and human readable proofs, i.e. with few algebra, of most of the theorems of the Euclidean plane. They are less succesful and convincing for incidence theorems of projective geometry, which has received less attention up to now. This is due to the fact that basic notions, like angles and distances, which are relevant for Euclidean geometry, are no more relevant for ...
متن کاملA Short Proof of Toruńczyk’s Characterization Theorems
We present short proofs of Toruńczyk’s well-known characterization theorems of the Hilbert cube and Hilbert space, respectively.
