with α 6= 0, and initial condition x(p, 0) = x0(p). This produces a family of curves γt = x(S, t). Here κ is the curvature, and n is the outward-pointing unit normal vector. These equations are particularly natural in that they are isotropic (equivariant under rotations in the plane) and homogeneous (equivariant under dilation of space, if time is also scaled accordingly). The main aim of this paper is to provide a complete description of the behaviour of embedded convex curves moving by equations of the form (1.1). In certain cases this description has already been provided: If α = 1 then Equation (1.1) is the curve-shortening flow, for which the following holds:

Observer strategies in perception of 3-D shape from isotropic textures: developable surfaces

We document the limitations of isotropic textures in conveying three-dimensional shape. We measured the perceived shape and pitch of upright and pitched corrugated surfaces overlaid with different classes of isotropic textures: patterns containing isotropic texture elements, isotropically filtered noise patterns, and patterns containing ellipses or lines of all orientations. Frequency modulatio...

Ja n 20 09 Uniform shrinking and expansion under isotropic Brownian flows

We study some finite time transport properties of isotropic Brownian flows. Under a certain nondegeneracy condition on the potential spectral measure, we prove that uniform shrinking or expansion of balls under the flow over some bounded time interval can happen with positive probability. We also provide a control theorem for isotropic Brownian flows with drift. Finally, we apply the above resu...

On the Geometric Flow of Kirchhoff Elastic Rods

Recently, rod theory has been applied to the mathematical modeling of bacterial fibers and biopolymers (e.g. DNA), to study their mechanical properties and shapes (e.g. supercoiling). In static rod theory, an elastic rod in equilibrium is the critical point of an elastic energy. This induces a natural question of how to find elasticae. In this paper, we focus on how to find the critical points ...

مدل‌سازی عددی جریان‌های لایه‌بندی شده‌ی غیر‌همسان با استفاده از مدل آشفتگی صریح جبری تنش رینولدز

Flows of natural hydro-environments are usually turbulent and mostly stratified, like the flows in lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and atmosphere to name a few. In stratified flows due to the buoyancy forces, the turbulent stresses are usually non-isotropic. Therefore the accuracy of the numerical simulations for such flows is highly dependent on the turbulence model and the implementation of non-...

2DV Nonlinear k-ε Turbulence Modeling of Stratified Flows

The commonly used linear k-ε turbulence model is shown to be incapable of accurate prediction of turbulent flows, where non-isotropy is dominant. Two examples of non-isotropic flows, which have a wide range of applications in marine waters, are saline water flow and the stratified flows due to temperature gradients. These relate to stratification and consequently, variation of density through...
