چکیده

has learned about the mechanism and regulation of secretory transport in Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito. After a brief review of insect salt and water balance, the emphasis shifts to the mechanism of action of two families of diuretic hormones, the CRF-like diuretic peptides and the kinins. To appreciate how the function of Malpighian tubules is integrated in the diverse activities of the insect, the reader is referred to the comprehensive mind of Clements (1992). The reader is also directed to much broader reviews of renal excretion in insects by Coast (2001) and Dow and Davies (2003).

A SLC4-like anion exchanger from renal tubules of the mosquito (Aedes aegypti): evidence for a novel role of stellate cells in diuretic fluid secretion.

Transepithelial fluid secretion across the renal (Malpighian) tubule epithelium of the mosquito (Aedes aegypti) is energized by the vacuolar-type (V-type) H(+)-ATPase and not the Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase. Located at the apical membrane of principal cells, the V-type H(+)-ATPase translocates protons from the cytoplasm to the tubule lumen. Secreted protons are likely to derive from metabolic H(2)CO(3), ...

The V-type H(+)-ATPase in Malpighian tubules of Aedes aegypti: localization and activity.

The V-type H(+)-ATPase is thought to provide the driving force for transepithelial electrolyte and fluid secretion in Malpighian tubules. To confirm the presence of this proton pump in Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, we used several antibodies raised against the V-type H(+)-ATPase of Manduca sexta. Western blot analysis confirmed the presence of the V-type H(+)-AT...

Use of the Ramsay Assay to Measure Fluid Secretion and Ion Flux Rates in the Drosophila melanogaster Malpighian Tubule.

Modulation of renal epithelial ion transport allows organisms to maintain ionic and osmotic homeostasis in the face of varying external conditions. The Drosophila melanogaster Malpighian (renal) tubule offers an unparalleled opportunity to study the molecular mechanisms of epithelial ion transport, due to the powerful genetics of this organism and the accessibility of its renal tubules to physi...

The excretion of NaCl and KCl loads in mosquitoes. 1. Control data.

The handling of Na(+) and K(+) loads was investigated in isolated Malpighian tubules and in whole mosquitoes of Aedes aegypti. Isolated Malpighian tubules bathed in Na(+)-rich Ringer solution secreted Na(+)-rich fluid, and tubules bathed in K(+)-rich Ringer solution secreted K(+)-rich fluid. Upon Na(+) loading the hemolymph, the mosquito removed 77% the injected Na(+) within the next 30 min. Th...

The single kinin receptor signals to separate and independent physiological pathways in Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito.

In the past, we have used the kinins of the cockroach Leucophaea (the leucokinins) to evaluate the mechanism of diuretic action of kinin peptides in Malpighian tubules of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. Now using the kinins of Aedes (the aedeskinins), we have found that in isolated Aedes Malpighian tubules all three aedeskinins (1 microM) significantly 1) increased the rate of fluid se...
