Pore-morphology-based simulation of drainage in totally wetting porous media

چکیده
We develop and analyze a novel, quasi-static, pore-scale approach for modeling drainage in a porous medium system. The approach uses: (1) a synthetic, non-overlapping packing of a set of spheres, (2) a discrete representation of the sphere packing, and (3) concepts from pore morphology and local pore-scale physics to simulate the drainage process. The grain-size distribution and porosity of two well-characterized porous media were used as input into the drainage simulator, and the simulated results showed good agreement with experimental observations. We further comment on the use of this simulator for determining the size of a representative elementary volume needed to characterize the drainage process. Ó 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A New Approach for Constructing Pore Network Model of Two Phase Flow in Porous Media
Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...

The objective of this study is to obtain quantitative evidence of pore-scale immiscible fluid distribution in oil-wet and water-wet porous media using X-ray computed microtomography. Temporal and spatial saturation profiles, as well as surface and interfacial areas, are thoroughly analyzed through cycles of drainage and imbibition using samples with different wetting characteristics but similar...

Microfluidics device are used to study the drainage of a wetting fluid by a non-wetting one in porous media. Both the geometry and the wetting properties are accurately controlled and allow to obtain quantitative measurements of the features of the capillary fingering occuring during the invasion as a function of the imposed flow rate. In partial wetting systems, a quantitative agreement is fou...

The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...
متن کاملModelling capillary trapping using finite-volume simulation of two-phase flow directly on micro-CT images
We study capillary trapping in porous media using direct pore-scale simulation of two-phase flow on microCT images of a Berea sandstone and a sandpack. The trapped non-wetting phase saturations are predicted by solving the full Navier–Stokes equations using a volume-of-fluid based finite-volume framework to simulate primary drainage followed by water injection. Using these simulations, we analy...
