Gravitational lensing with stochastic substructure: Effects of the clump mass function and spatial distribution

چکیده
Mass clumps in gravitational lens galaxies can perturb lensed images in characteristic ways. Strong lens flux ratios have been used to constrain the amount of dark matter substructure in lens galaxies, and various other observables have been considered as additional probes of substructure. We study the general theory of lensing with stochastic substructure in order to understand how lensing observables depend on the mass function and spatial distribution of clumps. We find that magnification perturbations are mainly sensitive to the total mass in substructure projected near the lensed images; when the source is small, flux ratios are not very sensitive to the shape of the clump mass function. Position perturbations are mainly sensitive to a characteristic clump mass scale, namely meff = 〈 m 〉 / 〈m〉, with some mild dependence on other mass moments when the spatial distribution is not uniform. They have contributions from both “local” and “global” populations of clumps (i.e., those projected near the images, and those farther away). Time delay perturbations are sensitive to the same characteristic mass, meff , and mainly driven by the global population of clumps. While there is significant scatter in all lensing quantities, there are some non-trivial correlations that may contain further information about the clump population. Our results indicate that a joint analysis of multiple lens observables will offer qualitatively new constraints on the mass function and spatial distribution of dark matter substructure in distant galaxies.

Extended Source Effects in Substructure Lensing
We investigate the extended source size effects on gravitational lensing in which a lens consists of a smooth potential and small mass clumps (“substructure lensing”). We first consider a lens model that consists of a clump modeled as a singular isothermal sphere (SIS) and a primary lens modeled as an external background shear and convergence. For this simple model, we derive analytic formulae ...

We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster, and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. The magnifications of the images in a strong gravitational lens system are sensitive to small mass clumps in the lens potential; this effect has been used to infer the amount of substructure in galaxy dark matter halos. I study the theory of substructure lensing to identify important general features, and to compute analytic cross sections that will facilitate further theoretical studies. I sho...
متن کاملDiscovering Mass Clumps in Distant Galaxies with Lensing: the Case of B1422+231
Substructure in distant gravitational lens galaxies can be detected because it alters the brightnesses and shapes of the lensed images. The optical and radio flux ratios in the four-image lens B1422+231 imply that there is a ∼ 10–10 h M⊙ mass clump in the lens galaxy in front of image A; this is the first constraint on the mass of a particular clump lying in a distant galaxy and detected by its...
