Biofilms Part 1: Overcome Candida by Disrupting Its Main Defense
نویسنده
چکیده
We have virtually no evidence the mycobiome makes a positive contribution to human health. Fungal cell wall components such as beta-glucan bind receptors on immune cells such as phagocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and certain classes of Tand B-lymphocytes, so one could hypothesize a beneficial effect on immunity,3 but commensal fungi are almost invariably pathogens or potential pathogens. Organisms such as Cryptococcus neoformans live in low numbers for decades in the lungs of otherwise healthy people only to emerge as a life-threatening fungus when the immune system is suppressed. Small populations of the species-specific fungal pathogen Pneumocystis jirovecii have been found in the mouths of healthy people.

Antifungal Activity of 14-Helical β-Peptides against Planktonic Cells and Biofilms of Candida Species
Candida albicans is the most prevalent cause of fungal infections and treatment is further complicated by the formation of drug resistant biofilms, often on the surfaces of implanted medical devices. In recent years, the incidence of fungal infections by other pathogenic Candida species such as C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis has increased. Amphiphilic, helical β-peptide structur...
متن کاملCandida albicans and virulence factors that increases its pathogenicity
Candida albicans are yeasts frequently human commensal and it is the main cause of different forms of oral, superficial or systemic candidiasis. The transformation from a harmless commensal to a virulent pathogen under the conditions of a dysfunctional host defense system is attributable to an extensive repertoire of selectively expressed virulence determinants. Several virulence factors contri...
متن کاملInactivation of Candida Biofilms by Non-Thermal Plasma and Its Enhancement for Fungistatic Effect of Antifungal Drugs
We investigated the antifungal effect of non-thermal plasma, as well as its combination with common antifungal drugs, against Candida biofilms. A direct current atmospheric pressure He/O(2) (2%) plasma microjet (PMJ) was used to treat Candida biofilms in a 96-well plate. Inactivation efficacies of the biofilms were evaluated by XTT assay and counting colony forming units (CFUs). Morphological p...
متن کاملEffect of tt-farnesol and myricetin on in vitro biofilm formed by Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans
BACKGROUND Dental caries is considered a multifactorial disease, in which microorganisms play an important role. The diet is decisive in the biofilm formation because it provides the necessary resources for cellular growth and exopolysaccharides synthesis. Exopolysaccharides are the main components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM provides a 3D structure, support for the microorganism...
متن کاملQuinacrine inhibits Candida albicans growth and filamentation at neutral pH.
Candida albicans is a common cause of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CR-BSI), in part due to its strong propensity to form biofilms. Drug repurposing is an approach that might identify agents that are able to overcome antifungal drug resistance within biofilms. Quinacrine (QNC) is clinically active against the eukaryotic protozoan parasites Plasmodium and Giardia. We sought to investi...
