چکیده

We consider the problem of dynamically allocating production capacity between two products to minimize the average inventory and backorder costs per unit time in a make-to-stock single machine system. Using sample path comparisons and dynamic programming, we give a characterization of the optimal hedging point policy for a certain region of the state space. The characterization is simple enough to lead to easily implementable heuristics and provides a formal justiication of some of the earlier heuristics proposed.

A Batch-wise ATP Procedure in Hybrid Make-to-Order/Make-to-Stock Manufacturing Environment

Satisfying customer demand necessitates manufacturers understanding the importance of Available-To-Promise (ATP). It directly links available resources to customer orders and has significant impact on overall performance of a supply chain. In this paper, an improvement of the batch-mode ATP function in which the partial fulfillment of the orders is available will be proposed. In other words, in...

Restless Bandit Marginal Productivity Indices, Diminishing Returns, and Optimal Control of Make-to-Order/Make-to-Stock M/G/1 Queues

This paper presents a framework grounded on convex optimization and economics ideas to solve by index policies problems of optimal dynamic allocation of effort to a discrete-state (finite or countable) binary-action (work/rest) semi-Markov restless bandit project, elucidating issues raised by previous work. Its contributions include: (i) the concept of a restless bandit’s marginal productivity ...

An improved genetic algorithm for multidimensional optimization of precedence-constrained production planning and scheduling

Integration of production planning and scheduling is a class of problems commonly found in manufacturing industry. This class of problems associated with precedence constraint has been previously modeled and optimized by the authors, in which, it requires a multidimensional optimization at the same time: what to make, how many to make, where to make and the order to make. It is a combinatorial,...

Restless Bandit Marginal Productivity Indices I: Single- Project Case and Optimal Control of a Make-to-stock M/g/1 Queue

Abstract This paper develops a framework based on convex optimization and economic ideas to formulate and solve by an index policy the problem of optimal dynamic effort allocation to a generic discrete-state restless bandit (i.e. binary-action: work/rest) project, elucidating a host of issues raised by Whittle (1988) ́s seminal work on the topic. Our contributions include: (i) a unifying definit...

Dynamic allocation indices for restless projects and queueing admission control: a polyhedral approach

This paper develops a polyhedral approach to the design, analysis, and computation of dynamic allocation indices for scheduling binary-action (engage/rest) Markovian stochastic projects which can change state when rested (restless bandits (RBs)), based on partial conservation laws (PCLs). This extends previous work by the author [J. Niño-Mora (2001): Restless bandits, partial conservation laws ...
