چکیده

SONET technology has made high-speed self-healing ring (SHR) architectures practical and economical for use in intra-LATA telecommunication networks. This paper reviews a class of SONET SHR architectures and their control schemes. The SHR architectures can be divided into two basic classes: bi-directional SHRs (B-SHRs) and uni-directional SHRs (U-SHRs). Bidirectional SHRs using four fibers and have evolved from today’s point-to-point protection automatic switching systems ( A P S s ) , while uni-directional SHRs use two fibers and may evolve from today’s APS or a new SONET path-level protection switching system system made possible by SONET pointers. The cost and capacity tradeoffs between B-SHRs and U-SHRs depend strongly upon the application, the network size and the demand pattern. BSHRs with four fibers can be operated under today’s operations environment without a significant change. However, U-SHRs using a path protection switching method may ease intervendor compatibility problems and can be implemented on a timely basis without changing the well-defined SONET AF’S protocol. The selection of appropriate SONET SHR architectures will depend upon the operating telephone companies’ economic analysis, emphasis on multi-vendor environment, SHR implementation time frame, and standards progress on making change to support a bi-directional ring architecture.

Survivable SONET networks-design methodology

A prototype software system that implements a methodology for the strategic planning of survivable interoffice networks is presented. The software system determines strategic locations and ring types for Synchronous Optical Network ring placement. Two types of survivable network architectures are considered-1 : 1 diverse protection and SONET self-healing rings. The software considers three type...

Balancing Inter-Ring Loads on SONET Dual-Ring without Demand Splitting

In the survivability and simplicity aspect, SONET Self-healing Ring(SHR) is one of the most important schemes for the high-speed telecommunication networks. Since the ring capacity requirement is defined by the largest STS-1 cross-section in the ring, load balancing is the key issue in the design of SONET SHR. Recently, most of the research on load balancing problem have been concentrated on th...

Evaluating Algorithms for Control and Survivability Mechanisms in SONET

During the last years, several types of network control and restoration techniques have been proposed and discussed. However it was evaluated that a single restoration technique in high-speed networks cannot cover the needs for control, survivability and economical spare channel assignment. This is due to the fact that each technique has its own feature and properties in terms of restoration ti...

Switching and Traffic Grooming in WDM Networks

We consider the role of switching in minimizing the number of electronic ports (e.g., SONET ADMs) in an optical network that carries sub-wavelength traffic. Providing nodes with the ability to switch traffic between wavelengths, such as through the use of SONET cross-connects, can reduce the required number of electronic ports. We show that only small switches distributed among the nodes in the...

Minimal Cost WDM SONET Rings

Minimal cost networks are presented when SONET UPSR and BLSR networks are deployed over a WDM fiber ring. The primary cost is the number of SONET ADMs, and a secondary cost is the number of wavelengths. The networks have been designed assuming a nonstatistical traffic model, and guarantees no blocking of traffic. Three network architectures are given that have low ADM costs. It is shown that ne...
