The GoMOOS nowcast/forecast system
نویسندگان
چکیده
A circulation nowcast/forecast system has been developed for the Gulf of Maine as an integral component of the Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS). It has been used daily since 2001 to produce short-term forecasts of the circulation and hydrographic properties in the Gulf of Maine. One of the expectations is that the nowcast/forecast system can provide consistent SST to fill in AVHRR data gaps and eventually produce reliable 3D temperature and flow fields for fisheries and other applications. The framework of the nowcast/forecast system is presented, including an algorithm for assimilating satellite-derived SST. Comparisons between the predicted and the observed temperature (both in situ and satellite-derived) and velocity are discussed. In general, the assimilation algorithm is stable and produces robust SST patterns. Seasonal variations in temperature and the coastal current are reasonably reproduced. Correlation between the modeled and observed fields in the synoptic band is summarized for individual buoys in monthly bins. The Root-Mean-Square (RMS) errors for the M2 tidal ellipse are estimated at 1.9 and 1.2 cm s 1 for the major and minor axis, respectively, while the RMS error in ellipse orientation is at 111. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. متن کاملA Bayesian Quantitative Precipitation Nowcast Scheme
Very short-period quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) or nowcast schemes provide deterministic output that fails to convey explicit measures of the uncertainty in the forecast. Presented here is a forecast methodology based upon a Bayesian hierarchical model that produces a QPF product for a 1-h period along with an associated estimated forecast error field. The precipitation forecast qua...
متن کاملOcean Nowcast/Forecast Systems for Improvement of Naval Undersea Capabilities
The U.S. Navy is a major investor in ocean model development. The pay-off of such an investment is the value-added ocean nowcast/forecast systems on naval operations and warfare effectiveness. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the value added of the Navy’s nowcast/forecast system to naval antisubmarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASUW). The nowcast/forecast versus observat...
متن کاملImproving Ocean Model Initialization for Coupled Tropical Cyclone Forecast Models Using GODAE Nowcasts
To simulate tropical cyclone (TC) intensification, coupled ocean–atmosphere prediction models must realistically reproduce the magnitude and pattern of storm-forced sea surface temperature (SST) cooling. The potential for the ocean to support intensification depends on the thermal energy available to the storm, which in turn depends on both the temperature and thickness of the upper-ocean warm ...
متن کاملAssimilation of the seabird and ship drift data in the north-eastern sea of Japan into an operational ocean nowcast/forecast system
At the present time, ocean current is being operationally monitored mainly by combined use of numerical ocean nowcast/forecast models and satellite remote sensing data. Improvement in the accuracy of the ocean current nowcast/forecast requires additional measurements with higher spatial and temporal resolution as expected from the current observation network. Here we show feasibility of assimil...
