Optimal control of laser hardening

We present a mathematical model for the laser surface hardening of steel. It consists of a nonlinear heat equation coupled with a system of ve ordinary diierential equations to describe the volume fractions of the occuring phases. Existence, regularity and stability results are discussed. Since the resulting hardness can be estimated by the volume fraction of martens-ite, we formulate the problem of surface hardening in terms of an optimal control problem. To avoid surface melting, which would decrease the workpiece's quality, state constraints for the temperature are included. We prove diierentiability of the solution operator and derive necessary conditions for optimality. RRsumm : Dans cet article nous presentons une moddlisation mathhmatique de durcissement par laser de la surface d'une piice en acier. Le moddle consiste en une quation non-linnaire de la chaleur couplle avec un systtme de cinq quations diiirentielles ordinaires. Celles-ci ddcrivent les fractions de volume des phases qui se produisent. Les rrsultats d'existence, de rrgularitt et de stabilitt sont tablis. Puisque la durett obtenue peut tre stimme par la fraction du volume de martensite, nous formulons le probllme de durcissement de la surface en terme d'un probllme de contrrle optimal. Pour viter les probllmes de fusion de cette surface, qui peuvent rrduire le rendement de la piice, le moddle est complett par des contraints d''tat pour la temprature. Nous montrons la diiirentiabilitt de l''quation d''tat par rapport au contrrle et ddrivons les conditions nncessaires d'optimalitt.
