چکیده

Richard Boyd's "Reading Student Resistance" and his earlier JAC article "Imitate Me; Don't Imitate Me" have convinced me that Rene Girard's theory of mimetic desire may have much to teach us about the dynamics of composition. Both articles offer an impressive analysis of imitation as a moment of coercion and "double bind" for students and teacher. In my view, Boyd's most significant insight concerns the reciprocal nature of resistance in teacher-student interaction. Students resist teachers' attempts to set learning agendas for them, while teachers resist these same students because of the implied alternative agendas in students' resistance. We teachers are every bit as involved in such resistance as our students. I confess-with a bit of embarrassment-that I saw myself in Boyd's description of his own defensive response to a teaching assistant who wrote to him asking, "Why don't you do your job and show us how we're supposed to teach writing?" Like Boyd, I've had teaching assistants write such things to me. I too have often responded with two-page tomes to a TA's few lines of resistance. Like him, I realize that these long responses are ''ultimately intended as persuasive and not dialogic" and that in writing them I am resisting their perspective as strongly as they are resisting mine. Boyd's use of Girard's theory of mimetic desire helps me to see part of this reciprocal resistance more clearly. As teachers, we do place TA's in a "double bind" of "imitate me; don't imitate me," asking them to imitate us by considering the big questions about how writing instruction

The effects of climate change on the distribution of an invasive fish in Iran: Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859)

Today, invasive species are considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The suitable habitats of these species are expected to be expanded under the effects of future climate change hence it is likely to threaten the existence of native species. Consequently, identifying the current and potential distribution range of invasive species is essential for managem...

The aim of this study is to provide necessary information on the biology of mosquitofish in Seyhan Dam Lake in Adana, which is located in southern part of Turkey. The population structure of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 was studied in Seyhan Dam Lake. A total of 1582 specimens (772 males and 810 females) were collected monthly from January to December, 2007. The age comp...

Investigation of stepped planning hull hydrodynamics using computational fluid dynamics and response surface method

The use of step at the bottom of the hull is one of the effective factors in reducing the resistance and increasing the stability of the Planning hull. The presence of step at the bottom of this type of hulls creates a separation in the flow, which reduces the wet surface on the hull, thus reducing the drag on the body, as well as reducing the dynamic trim. In this study, a design space was cre...

A dual-motive model of scapegoating: displacing blame to reduce guilt or increase control.

The authors present a model that specifies 2 psychological motives underlying scapegoating, defined as attributing inordinate blame for a negative outcome to a target individual or group, (a) maintaining perceived personal moral value by minimizing feelings of guilt over one's responsibility for a negative outcome and (b) maintaining perceived personal control by obtaining a clear explanation f...
