چکیده

The maxilary nerve can be block in the pterygopalatine fossa, entering from oral cavity via greater palatine canal. The aim of this study was to analyse the volume of the pterygopalatine fossa and its relationship with upper facial height and cephalic indexes. In 71 human adults skulls, without sex distinction, was determined the volume of the pterygopalatine fossa and cephalic and upper facial height indexes. Through a t test (p < 0.05) were compared the average volume between cephalic and facial types. The average volume of the pterygopalatine fossa was 1.2 ml (DS 0.297), were not found differences according to the cephalic or facial type.

Modified partial maxillary swing approach for myxofibrosarcoma in pterygopalatine fossa.

BACKGROUND Extirpation of tumors arising in the pterygopalatine fossa is challenging because of its anatomic complexity. METHODS AND RESULTS A 67-year-old man was referred to our department with a diagnosis of a tumor in his left pterygoid fossa. An incisional biopsy through the canine fossa was diagnosed as myxofibrosarcoma. The upper part of the maxilla was swung laterally to remove the tum...

Microanatomy of the neural scaffold of the pterygopalatine fossa in humans: trigeminovascular projections and trigeminal-autonomic plexuses.

The pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is an anatomically-hidden deep extracranial space. The neural scaffold of the PPF remains anatomically understudied in humans. Moreover, there are no anatomical data in humans pointing out the extracranial trigeminovascular distributions, in contrast to the trigeminal supratentorial ones. By anatomical microdissections, the neural scaffold of the PPF and the pres...

The fetal pterygopalatine ganglion in man

The pterygopalatine ganglion derives from preotic myelencephalic crest cells and may receive contributions from the ganglia of the trigeminal and facial nerves [1]. There is no available information on the pterygopalatine ganglion morphology and structure in human fetuses. In adults the pterygopalatine ganglion is morphologically attached to the maxillary nerve, in the pterygopalatine fossa. Ly...

Ultrasound-guided trigeminal nerve block via the pterygopalatine fossa: an effective treatment for trigeminal neuralgia and atypical facial pain.

BACKGROUND Patients presenting with facial pain often have ineffective pain relief with medical therapy. Cases refractory to medical management are frequently treated with surgical or minimally invasive procedures with variable success rates. We report on the use of ultrasound-guided trigeminal nerve block via the pterygopalatine fossa in patients following refractory medical and surgical treat...

Heterotopic brain in the pterygopalatine fossa.

Heterotopic brain outside the cranial vault is uncommon. It occurs most frequently in the nasal region, although rests elsewhere in the aerodigestive tract have been reported. We describe a case of heterotopic brain in the pterygopalatine fossa.
