Non-thermal radiation of cosmological γ-ray bursters

چکیده
We use one-and-a-half dimensional particle-in-cell plasma simulations to study the interaction of a relativistic, strongly magnetized wind with an ambient medium. Such an interaction is a plausible mechanism which leads to generation of cosmological γ-ray bursts. We confirm the idea of Mészáros and Rees (1992) that an essential part (about 20%) of the energy that is lost by the wind in the process of its deceleration may be transferred to high-energy electrons and then to high-frequency (X-ray and γ-ray) emission. We show that in the wind frame the spectrum of electrons which are accelerated at the wind front and move ahead of the front is nearly a two-dimensional relativistic Maxwellian with a relativistic temperature T = mec Γ T /k ' 6 × 10Γ T K, where Γ T is equal to 200Γ0 with the accuracy of ∼ 20%, and Γ0 is the Lorentz factor of the wind, Γ0 ∼> 10 for winds outflowing from cosmological γ-ray bursters. Our simulations point to an existence of a high-energy tail of accelerated electrons with a Lorentz factor of more than ∼ 700Γ0. Large-amplitude electromagnetic waves are generated by the oscillating currents at the wind front. The mean field of these waves ahead of the wind front is an order of magnitude less than the magnetic field of the wind. High-energy electrons which are accelerated at the wind front and injected into the region ahead of the front generate synchro-Compton radiation in the fields of large-amplitude electromagnetic waves. This radiation closely resembles synchrotron radiation and can reproduce the non-thermal radiation of γ-ray bursts observed in the Ginga and BATSE ranges (from a few keV to a few MeV). Synchrotron photons which are generated in the vicinity of the wind front may be responsible for the radiation of γ-ray bursts in the EGRET energy range above a few ten MeV. The spectrum of γ-ray bursts in high-energy γ-rays may extend, in principle, up to the maximum energy of the accelerated electrons which is about 10(Γ0/10 ) eV in the frame of the γ-ray burster. On the Nature of Nonthermal Radiation from Cosmological Γ-ray Bursters
Relativistic electron-positron winds with strong magnetic fields are considered as a source of radiation for cosmological γ-ray bursters. Such a wind is generated by a millisecond pulsar with a very strong magnetic field. An electronpositron plasma near the pulsar is optically thick and in quasi-thermodynamic equilibrium. It is shown that the main part of radiation from the pulsar wind is nonth...
متن کاملGAMMA-RAY BURSTERS AS SOURCES OF COSMIC RAYS Mordehai Milgrom and Vladimir Usov
The little we do know of the physical conditions in γ-ray bursters[1] makes them conducive to the acceleration of high-energy cosmic rays (CRs), especially if they are at cosmological distances. We find that, with the observed statistics and fluxes of γ-ray bursts, cosmological bursters may be an important source of cosmic rays in two regions of the observed spectrum: 1. At the very-high-energy...
متن کاملSupermassive Objects as Gamma-Ray Bursters
We propose that the gravitational collapse of supermassive objects (M ∼> 10 M⊙), either as relativistic star clusters or as single supermassive stars (which may result from stellar mergers in dense star clusters), could be a cosmological source of γ-ray bursts. These events could provide the seeds of the supermassive black holes observed at the center of many galaxies. Collapsing supermassive o...
متن کاملPrecursors of Gamma-ray Bursts: a Clue to the Burster’s Nature
In relativistic strongly magnetized winds outflowing from the fast-rotating compact progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) there are three regions where powerful high-frequency emission may be generated: (i) the thermal photosphere, (ii) the region of the internal wind instability and (iii) the region of the wind interaction with an ambient gas. This results in a multicomponent structure of GRB...
متن کاملGalactic γ-ray bursters – an alternative source of cosmic rays at all energies
We propose a new hypothesis for the origin of the major part of non-solar hadronic cosmic rays (CRs) at all energies: highly relativistic, narrowly collimated jets from the birth or collapse of neutron stars (NSs) in our Galaxy accelerate ambient disk and halo matter to CR energies and disperse it in hot spots which they form when they stop in the Galactic halo. Such events are seen as cosmolog...
