The initial courses were disciplinary in nature but in 1996 interdisciplinary courses were introduced. At NJIT educational and research collaborative efforts between Civil and Chemical Engineering Faculty have been common practice. Hence, four modules were developed based on environmentally related industrial or municipal design problems. In each of these modules, the Civil Engineers had the responsibility for the siting factors, which were both environmental and political restrictions, and the economic aspects of the problem. The Chemical Engineers had the process analysis and design responsibility. Teamed in groups of three to five, students were introduced to a real, open-ended design problem and the concepts of siting, process analysis, process design, teamwork and oral and written communications.

Engineering Design Process –An Interdisciplinary Approach
In the 21 century, modern engineering design is practiced as an interdisciplinary endeavor requiring individual engineers to work as part of a team that involves a range of specialists. An interdisciplinary approach to engineering design sensitizes team members (students, faculty and industry partners) to multiple perspectives and discourages them from taking comfort in the singular domain to w...
متن کاملIncorporating an Entrepreneurial Mindset in a Freshman Mechanical Engineering Course
This paper presents a case of incorporating Project-Based Learning (PBL) and EntrepreneuriallyMinded Learning (EML) to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in a freshman-level, introductory course in mechanical engineering within an ABET accredited program. The course is designed to teach the basic tools and skills of engineering such as graphics communication, solid modeling, and programming, wit...

The hallmark of the newly configured Rowan College of Engineering undergraduate program is the interdisciplinary, project oriented clinic sequence that spans 8 semesters. This sequence is taken by all engineering students. In this paper, we specifically describe the innovative efforts in the second semester of Freshman Clinic that is devoted to competitive assessment through reverse engineering...
متن کاملEngineering for Interdisciplinary Collaboration
This chapter introduces Collaboration Engineering as an approach to developing more effective collaborative sessions for interdisciplinary teams. Collaboration is the foundation for success for many academic teams; however, the benefits of collaborative sessions can be lost when group processes are not well understood and the needs of interdisciplinary teams are not met. As such, this chapter w...
متن کاملDistributed leadership: building capacity for interdisciplinary climate change teaching at four universities
Purpose Interdisciplinary approaches to climate change teaching are well justified and arise from the complexity of climate change challenges and the integrated problem-solving responses they demand. These approaches require academic teachers to collaborate across disciplines. Yet, the fragmentation typical of universities impedes collaborative teaching practice. This paper aims to report on th...
