Plant diversity and productivity experiments in european grasslands
نویسندگان
چکیده
At eight European field sites, the impact of loss of plant diversity on primary productivity was simulated by synthesizing grassland communities with different numbers of plant species. Results differed in detail at each location, but there was an overall log-linear reduction of average aboveground biomass with loss of species. For a given number of species, communities with fewer functional groups were less productive. These diversity effects occurred along with differences associated with species composition and geographic location. Niche complementarity and positive species interactions appear to play a role in generating diversity-productivity relationships within sites in addition to sampling from the species pool.

Leaf Dry Matter Content Predicts Herbivore Productivity, but Its Functional Diversity Is Positively Related to Resilience in Grasslands
This paper addresses whether the ecosystem service of animal production from grasslands depends upon plant functional identity, plant functional diversity or if the resilience of production is a function of this diversity. Using the results of nine grazing experiments the paper shows that productivity is highly dependent on one leaf trait, leaf dry matter content, as well as rainfall. Animal (s...
متن کاملGrasslands of the World: Diversity, Management and Conservation
Features provide a comprehensive global overview of extent and diversity of grasslands. Analyzes how humans shaped grasslands through millennia of use and which role they play in present-day agriculture. Quantifies the role of grasslands as biodiversity hotspots as well as the drivers threatening these. Evaluates the ecosystem services grasslands provide e.g. in terms of soil protection and car...
متن کاملImpact of Land-Use Intensity and Productivity on Bryophyte Diversity in Agricultural Grasslands
While bryophytes greatly contribute to plant diversity of semi-natural grasslands, little is known about the relationships between land-use intensity, productivity, and bryophyte diversity in these habitats. We recorded vascular plant and bryophyte vegetation in 85 agricultural used grasslands in two regions in northern and central Germany and gathered information on land-use intensity. To asse...
متن کاملPlant functional trait diversity regulates the nonlinear response of productivity to regional climate change in Tibetan alpine grasslands
The biodiversity-productivity relationship is still under debate for alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau. We know little about direct and indirect effects of biotic and abiotic drivers on this relationship, especially in regard to plant functional trait diversity. Here, we examine how aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and precipitation use efficiency (PUE) respond to climate, soi...
متن کاملGrassland Ecology 14
• Grasslands are one of Earth’s major biomes and the native vegetation of up to 40 % of Earth’s terrestrial surface. Grasslands occur on every continent except Antarctica, are ecologically and economically important, and provide critical ecosystem goods and services at local, regional, and global scales. • Grasslands are surprisingly diverse and difficult to define. Although grasses and other g...
