چکیده

Segura, J.C., Ouellette C., Feddes J.J.R., Fasenko G.M. and Zuidhof M.J. 2006. Development of a metabolic calorimeter system to measure heat production of domestic avian embryos during incubation. Canadian Biosystems Engineering/Le génie des biosystèmes au Canada 48: 4.1 4.6. A metabolic calorimeter system was developed to facilitate collection of metabolic data from 24 embryos within an incubator. The system was designed to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen, and water vapour over a 2.5-minute period every hour from each metabolic chamber during both the incubation (18 days) and the hatching stage (21 days). The system can be conveniently calibrated by adjusting individual calorimeter airflow rates with a volumetric flow meter. An experiment was conducted to test the system’s ability to measure embryonic heat production calculated from CO2 production data and an assumed respiratory quotient (RQ) value of 0.84 to calculate oxygen consumption. Two pre-incubation egg storage duration treatments (4 or 15 days) were used to test the system for reliability and ability to measure heat production indirectly. The system satisfactorily measured the CO2 production of chicken embryos during the 18 day incubation period. At 0 and 18 days, the production of CO2 ranged from 3 to 480 mL/d, respectively, while calculated heat production values ranged from 1 to 137 mW, respectively.

The avian embryo undergoes a thermoregulatory transition from being a poikilotherm in its egg to being a homeotherm at or shortly after hatching. Thermoregulation in hatchling chicks relies on non-shivering endogenous heat production to control body temperature (Tb) (Whittow and Tazawa, 1991; Roberts, 1996; Tazawa et al., 2001), but the physiological adjustments and the timing of their onset as...

Physiological, Biochemical and Metabolic Responses of Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) as Affected by Early Heat Stress and Dietary Treatment

The main objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of short- term exposure of Japanese quail eggs to acute high incubation temperature on embryonic development and on the ability of post- hatched chicks to cope with subsequent heat stress conditions during the growing period. A total of 998 Japanese quail eggs were divided into two groups, the first group (470 eggs) was maintained at ...

Optimization of incubation temperature in embryonated chicken eggs inoculated with H9N2 vaccinal subtype of avian influenza virus

There are little information about growth properties of low pathogenic (LP) avian influenza virus (AIV) in embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs) at different incubation temperatures. Knowledge of this information increases the quantity and quality of antigen in vaccine production process. For this purpose, 10-5 dilution of AIV (A/Chicken/Iran/99/H9N2) was inoculated (Intra-allantoic) into ...

Environmental alterations during development induce phenotypic changes in embryos of egg laying vertebrates. Chronic hypoxic incubation of avian and reptilian embryos

Environmental alterations during development induce phenotypic changes in embryos of egg laying vertebrates. Chronic hypoxic incubation of avian and reptilian embryos reduces O2 delivery to developing tissues and triggers cardiac hypertrophy (Kam, 1993; Miller et al., 2002); increased extraembryonic vascularization (Corona and Warburton, 2000), increased sympathetic innervation of the vasculatu...

I-19: Surrogate Egg Shell Culture for The Analysis of Avian Stem Cell Fate

Background: The chick embryo is a classical model to study embryonic development. However, most researchers have not studied the effect of embryonic manipulation on chick hatchability. To determine the effect of egg orientation and type of sealing film on the hatchability of cultured embryos, and to determine the fate of adulte stem cells injected into the blastoderm. Materials and Methods: Win...
