NEL, Morphine and Peritonitis in Chickens

چکیده
BAKGROUND : Morphine exerts immunomodulatory effects dependent on several factors including species and parameter examined. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of morphine on experimental peritonitis and leukocyte activity in young chickens of both sexes. METHODS: Peritonitis was elicited by intraperitoneal injection of thioglycollate (TG) alone or supplemented with morphine; additional chicken groups were injected with morphine alone. Morphine-treated birds (with or without elicited peritonitis) were pretreated with naltrexone, an antagonist of opioid receptors. Control groups were intact or PBS-injected. At specific postinjection intervals peritoneal leukocytes (PTL) were obtained by flushing the peritoneal cavity, counted and used for in vitro assays of activity (respiratory burst). Vascular permeability was measured using Evans blue solution. RESULTS : Inflammatory reaction and morphine influence were genderdependent: the extent of TG-induced peritonitis was higher in males and it was additionally stimulated by morphine. This pro-inflammatory effect of morphine was not seen in females. PTL collected from morphine-treated chickens of both sexes exhibited a stronger nitroblue tetrazolium reduction than in non-treated birds and this effect was antagonized by naltrexone. CONCLUSIONS : The effect of morphine on peritonitis in chickens appears different to that in other vertebrate species, although the mechanism(s) of its influence on leukocyte activity are similar

Mast cells are responsible for the lack of anti-inflammatory effects of morphine in CBA mice.
BACKGROUND AND AIM Morphine co-injection has anti-inflammatory effects on zymosan-induced peritonitis in several strains of mice except that of CBA. As peritoneal mast cells (pMCs) are much more numerous in CBA mice than in SWISS mice, therole of pMCs in morphine-modulated zymosan peritonitis is compared in CBA and SWISS males. METHODS pMCs were treated in vitro with morphine or C48/80 for co...
متن کاملCharacterization of Escherichia coli isolates from peritonitis lesions in commercial laying hens.
Five clinically normal chickens from three farms (farm A, farm B, and farm C), for a total of 15 clinically normal chickens, were examined bacteriologically. In a similar manner, five dead chickens with lesions of peritonitis from each of the same three commercial egg-laying operations were selected for bacterial culturing. Escherichia coli were isolated from the cloaca in 14 of 15 healthy chic...
متن کاملMet-Enkephalin Involvement in Morphine-Modulated Peritonitis in Swiss Mice
Morphine coinjection with zymosan inhibits pain and leukocyte accumulation during peritonitis in several strains of mice, and affects systems of endogenous opioids. Present investigations focus on Met-enkephalin (Met-ENK) in the inflamed peritoneal cavity and brain centers of Swiss mice. Males of Swiss mice were IP injected with zymosan or zymosan supplemented with morphine. At the selected tim...
متن کاملConsequences of concurrent Ascaridia galli and Escherichia coli infections in chickens
Three experiments were carried out to examine the consequences of concurrent infections with Ascaridia galli and Escherichia coli in chickens raised for table egg production. Characteristic pathological lesions including airsacculitis, peritonitis and/or polyserositis were seen in all groups infected with E. coli. Furthermore, a trend for increased mortality rates was observed in groups infecte...
متن کاملFirst report of Gallibacterium isolation from layer chickens in Iran
Gallibacterium, a gram-negative coccobacillus, is a genus of the Pasteurellaceae family with capability of infecting a wide range of avian host species. In 2003, Gallibacterium was selected instead of different previous names. Four different species has been recognized in Gallibacterium genus so far. Members of the genus can cause a wide range of pathological lesions, from upper respiratory tra...
