چکیده

This paper investigates to what extent the grammatical class(es) of a word can be predicted on the basis of phonological and prosodic information only. We report on several experiments with an artificial learning system which has to assign English wordforms to their appropriate grammatical class, using various types of phonological and prosodic information. First of all, we examine several phonological cues which were claimed by Kelly (1996) to be particularly good for distinguishing English nouns from verbs. Our results indicate that these cues are indeed partially predictive for the problem at hand and reveal that a combination of cues yields significantly better results than those obtained for each cue individually. We then show experimentally that ‘raw’ segmental information, augmented with word stress, allows the learning system to improve considerably upon those results . Secondly, we investigate several generalizations of the approach: basic segmental information also proves to be more predictive when the task * Preparation of this paper was supported by a VNC project of FWO NWO (contract number G.2201.96) and by a GOA grant (contract number 98/3). Thanks are due to Walter Daelemans, Frank Wijnen and the participants in the TROPICS conference for interesting discussions of phonological bootstrapping, and to Annick De Houwer for her critical reading of the manuscript.

Predicting Grammatical Categories

We investigate to what extent the grammatical class(es) of a word can be predicted exclusively on the basis of phonological and prosodic information. We report on several experiments with an artificial learning system which has to assign English nouns and verbs to their appropriate grammatical class using various types of phonological and prosodic information. We replicate the claim articulated...

The differential role of phonological and distributional cues in grammatical categorisation.

Recognising the grammatical categories of words is a necessary skill for the acquisition of syntax and for on-line sentence processing. The syntactic and semantic context of the word contribute as cues for grammatical category assignment, but phonological cues, too, have been implicated as important sources of information. The value of phonological and distributional cues has not, with very few...

Semantic Regularities in Grammatical Categories: Learning Grammatical Gender in an Artificial Language

The knowledge of grammatical categories such as nouns and verbs is considered to lie at the foundations of human language comprehension and production abilities. Words’ distributional and phonological properties contribute to both adult and infant learning of grammatical categories. Here we investigate the contribution of semantic cues to the acquisition of grammatical categories using grammati...

The phonological-distributional coherence hypothesis: cross-linguistic evidence in language acquisition.

Several phonological and prosodic properties of words have been shown to relate to differences between grammatical categories. Distributional information about grammatical categories is also a rich source in the child's language environment. In this paper we hypothesise that such cues operate in tandem for developing the child's knowledge about grammatical categories. We term this the Phonologi...

A universal cue for grammatical categories in the input to children: Frequent frames

How does a child map words to grammatical categories when words are not overtly marked either lexically or prosodically? Recent language acquisition theories have proposed that distributional information encoded in sequences of words or morphemes might play a central role in forming grammatical classes. To test this proposal, we analyze child-directed speech from seven typologically diverse lan...
