Subjective Risk, Confidence, and Ambiguity

چکیده

The paper extends a dynamic version of the classical von NeumannMorgenstern setting to incorporate a degree of confidence in or subjectivity of probabilistic beliefs. It provides a simple axiomatic characterization of a new preference representation that addresses ambiguity from a simple perspective, employing only basic tools from risk analysis. Conceptually, the paper renders the concept of smooth ambiguity aversion more precise and extends it to a more general notion of aversion to the subjectivity of belief. The representation maintains the normatively desirable axioms of the standard setting including the von Neumann-Morgenstern axioms and time consistency. JEL Codes: D81, Q54, D90, Q01

Subjective Probability and Confidence

This paper shows that a unique and additive subjective belief can be derived from choice behavior that reveals Ellsberg-type ambiguity aversion. This belief is obtained as a component of a utility representation where subjective probabilities are contaminated by an exogenous information set. This representation delivers a parameter that is interpretable as a degree of the decision maker’s confi...

Title : The neural representation of subjective value under risk and ambiguity

Risk and ambiguity are two conditions in which the consequences of possible outcomes are not certain. Under risk the probabilities of different outcomes can be estimated, while under ambiguity even these probabilities are not known. Although most people exhibit at least some aversion to both risk and ambiguity, the degree of these aversions is largely uncorrelated across subjects, suggesting th...

Subjective probability, confidence, and Bayesian updating

I derive a unique subjective probabilistic belief p and Bayesian updating for this belief from ambiguity averse preferences. To do so, I assume an exogenous information set ∆ of possible probabilistic scenarios on the state space S. Every uncertain prospect f is evaluated via a mixture of the unique subjective belief p with the least favorable scenario for f in the set ∆. The weight of p in thi...

Subjective Beliefs And Confidence When Facts Are Forgotten

We run several experiments where people bet on propositions (facts) that they cannot recall with certainty. Forgetting is induced via interference tasks and time delays (up to one year). We use betting preferences to define subjects’ revealed beliefs and their confidence in these beliefs. Forgetting makes revealed beliefs less accurate and reduces the subjective confidence metric as well. Moreo...
