Evaluation of functional outcome measures for the hemiparetic upper limb: a systematic review.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To identify valid and reliable outcome measures reflective of "real-life" active and passive function for application following focal rehabilitation interventions in the hemiparetic upper limb after stroke or brain injury. METHODS A systematic review of the literature, incorporating a wide-based search including electronic databases, primary reports, abstracts and conference proceedings, was undertaken to identify measures, followed by a literature-based evaluation of the psychometric properties. RESULTS Six measures met the review selection criteria, although 4 were different versions of the Motor Activity Log. None of the measures met all the psychometric evaluation criteria. The tools effectively formed a hierarchy with the ABILHAND and Motor Activity Log representing quite thoroughly evaluated tools of higher level "active function". The Leeds Adult Spasticity Impact Scale addressed lower level tasks and passive function, but had little published psychometric evaluation. CONCLUSION As yet there is no single valid and reliable outcome measure available to capture the full range of "real-life" function in the hemiparetic upper limb. Validated tools are particularly required for passive and lower level function. The selection of measures for clinical evaluation will depend on the patient's level of function and goals for treatment.

Conceptualisation and development of the arm activity measure (ArmA) for assessment of activity in the hemiparetic arm
PURPOSE To develop a patient reported outcome measure of active and passive function in the hemiparetic upper limb. METHODS Potential items for inclusion were identified through (a) systematic review and analysis of existing measures and (b) analysis of the primary goals for treatment in a spasticity service. Item reduction was achieved through consultation with a small, purposively selected ...
متن کاملNormalizing the Arm Reaching Patterns after Stroke through Forced Use Therapy– A Systematic Review
Hemiparesis is common following stroke. The ability to reach and grasp is a necessary component of many daily life functional tasks, hence reduced upper limb function has an impact on the ability to perform activities of daily living. In hemiparetic patients, the unrestricted and unguided repetition of a motor task may reinforce compensatory movements. Trunk restraint allowed the patients to us...

Background and Objective: Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a severe debilitating neurological condition in adults. This study sought to assess the effect of observation and mimicking functional activities on weight distribution and dynamic balance index improvement in lower limbs of hemiparetic patients based on mirror neuron theory. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was performed on ...
متن کاملEffects of robot-assisted therapy on stroke rehabilitation in upper limbs: systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature.
We systematically reviewed and analyzed the literature to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that employed robotic devices in upper-limb rehabilitation of people with stroke. Out of 574 studies, 12 matching the selection criteria were found. The Fugl-Meyer, Functional Independence Measure, Motor Power Scale, and Motor Status Scale outcome measures from the selected RCTs were pooled togeth...
متن کاملRadiographic Predictors for Short-term Functional Outcome after Radial Head Arthroplasty in Patients with Persistent Symptoms after Treatment for Radial Head
Background: Evaluation of the accurate position after radial head arthroplasty remains a challenge for surgeons.Standard radiographs are used to evaluate the position of the implant, however, results regarding radiographicdeficiencies on clinical outcome are not consistent. In this retrospective study our main aim was to determine if subtleradiographic deficiencies after radia...
