Optimized distortion correction technique for echo planar imaging.

چکیده
A new phase-shifted EPI pulse sequence is described that encodes EPI phase errors due to all off-resonance factors, including B(o) field inhomogeneity, eddy current effects, and gradient waveform imperfections. Combined with the previously proposed multichannel modulation postprocessing algorithm (Chen and Wyrwicz, MRM 1999;41:1206-1213), the encoded phase error information can be used to effectively remove geometric distortions in subsequent EPI scans. The proposed EPI distortion correction technique has been shown to be effective in removing distortions due to gradient waveform imperfections and phase gradient-induced eddy current effects. In addition, this new method retains advantages of the earlier method, such as simultaneous correction of different off-resonance factors without use of a complicated phase unwrapping procedure. The effectiveness of this technique is illustrated with EPI studies on phantoms and animal subjects. Implementation to different versions of EPI sequences is also described. Effect of Phase-Encoding Reduction on Geometric Distortion and BOLD Signal Changes in fMRI
Introduction Echo-planar imaging (EPI) is a group of fast data acquisition methods commonly used in fMRI studies. It acquires multiple image lines in k-space after a single excitation, which leads to a very short scan time. A well-known problem with EPI is that it is more sensitive to distortions due to the used encoding scheme. Source of distortion is inhomogeneity in the static B0 field that ...
متن کاملCorrection of concomitant magnetic field-induced image artifacts in nonaxial echo-planar imaging.
Echo-planar images acquired in nonaxial planes are often distorted. Such image distortion has limited the applications of the echo-planar imaging (EPI) technique. In this article, it is demonstrated that a considerable amount of the distortion is caused by the higher-order magnetic field concomitant with the linear magnetic field gradient, or the concomitant magnetic field. The image distortion...
متن کاملGeometric distortion correction in echo volumar imaging
Introduction: Echo volumar imaging (EVI) is a 3D extension of echo-planar imaging (EPI) that allows data from an entire volume to be acquired following a single excitation. However, only a few studies to date have applied EVI to functional MRI (fMRI) due to its high sensitivity to field-inhomogeneity induced distortions. In this study, we extend two EPI distortion correction techniques to EVI: ...
متن کاملCorrection for EPI distortions using multi-echo gradient-echo imaging.
A novel and effective technique is described for distortion correction in echo planar imaging (EPI) utilizing the field maps derived from multi-echo gradient-echo images. The distortions from different off-resonance related factors such as field inhomogeneity, eddy current effect, radiofrequency pulse frequency offset, and chemical shift effect can be simultaneously reduced to a great extent. W...
متن کاملCorrecting dynamic distortions in 7T echo planar imaging using a jittered echo time sequence
PURPOSE To develop a distortion correction method for echo planar imaging (EPI) that is able to measure dynamic changes in B0 . THEORY AND METHODS The approach we propose is based on single-echo EPI with a jittering of the echo time between two values for alternate time points. Field maps are calculated between phase images from adjacent volumes and are used to remove distortion from correspo...
