چکیده

Abstract. We investigate the influence of impurities and vacancies in the formation of magnetic moment in CaB6 using full potential ab initio band structure calculations. CaB6 is found to be a band insulator with a band gap of about 0.2 eV. The calculated results indicate that carbon and oxygen substitution in boron sublattice, usually expected as impurity in low purity borons, do not play significant role in the local moment formation. Boron vacancy in the boron sublattice, on the other hand, leads to the formation of an impurity band in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which exhibit finite exchange splitting and magnetic moment. All these results provide remarkable representation of the experimental results. This finding of the role of vacancies in the sublattice responsible for electronic conduction is an important revelation in the understanding of ferromagnetism in the diluted electron system.

Bulk band gaps in divalent hexaborides.

Complementary angle-resolved photoemission and bulk-sensitive k-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of divalent hexaborides reveal a >1 eV X-point gap between the valence and conduction bands, in contradiction to the band overlap assumed in several models of their novel ferromagnetism. This semiconducting gap implies that carriers detected in transport measurements arise from defects, ...

CaB6: a new semiconducting material for spin electronics.

Ferromagnetism was recently observed at unexpectedly high temperatures in La-doped CaB6. The starting point of all theoretical proposals to explain this observation is a semimetallic electronic structure calculated for CaB6 within the local density approximation. Here we report the results of parameter-free quasiparticle calculations of the single-particle excitation spectrum which show that Ca...

0 N ov 1 99 9 Exact ground state for 1 D electronic models

We have found the exact ground state for two electronic models on a linear chain. The first model describes half-filling electron system in the ferromagnet– antiferromagnet transition point. In the singlet ground state the spin correlators show giant spiral magnetic ordering with the period of a spiral equals to the system size. The second electronic model describes the point where the ground s...

Influence of the Vacancies on the Buckling Behavior of a Single–Layered Graphene Nanosheet

Graphene is a new class of two-dimensional carbon nanostructure, which holds great promise for the vast applications in many technological fields. It would be one of the prominent new materials for the next generation nano-electronic devices. In this paper the influence of various vacancy defects on the critical buckling load of a single-layered graphene nanosheet is investigated. The nanosheet...

Using a spin-rotation invariant six-slave boson representation, we study the square lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping t and next-nearest neighbor hopping t ′. We discuss the influence of t ′ on the charge and magnetic properties. In the hole-doped domain, we find that a negative t ′ strongly favors itinerant ferromag-netism over any incommensurate phase, especially in the stro...
