The Long Record of Schistosomiasis in Senegal

چکیده

In the town of Bakel, the French scientist Le Dantec encountered 20 patients showing symptoms of “vesical Schistosomiasis” in 1908. This represents the first record of schistosomiasis cases in Senegal [1]. In line with the country’s great diversity in aquatic habitat within Senegal, at least five species of snails are known to act as intermediate hosts for human infective schistosomes: Bulinus senegalensis, B. globosus, B. umbilicatus, B. truncates, and seasonal populations of Biomphalaria pfeifferi [1,2].

Low awareness of intestinal schistosomiasis in northern Senegal after 7 years of health education as part of intense control and research activities.

We evaluated the awareness of and knowledge about intestinal schistosomiasis in a highly infected rural community of northern Senegal where a variety of health information and education activities had taken place for 7 years as a component of different research and control programmes. As the infection had been introduced only recently, an initial 'zero' knowledge can be assumed. Most of the hea...

Studies on the biology of schistosomiasis with emphasis on the Senegal river basin.

The construction of the Diama dam on the Senegal river, the Manantali dam on the Bafing river, Mali and the ensuing ecological changes have led to a massive outbreak of Schistosoma mansoni in Northern Senegal, associated with high intensity of infections, due to intense transmission, and the creation of new foci of S. haematobium. Data on the vectorial capacity of Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Nd...

Rodents as reservoir hosts in the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni in Richard-Toll, Senegal, West Africa.

More than 2000 animals belonging to six different rodent species and one insectivore species were examined for infection with schistosomes in the region of Richard-Toll, Senegal. Two murid rodents, Arvicanthis niloticus and Mastomys huberti, were found infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Prevalences were about 5% for both rodent species with a mean worm burden of about 20 worms per host. The sex...
