چکیده

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have attracted tremendous interest in recent years as promising media, which could be an alternative to the environmentpolluting, volatile common organic solvents. In this article, we focus on the studies of dynamic Stokes shift of the fluorescence spectra of dipolar solutes in RTILs. These studies throw light on the nature of solvation dynamics in media that are conceptually quite different from the conventional solvents. A brief introduction to the RTILs and results of some relevant spectroscopic studies have been provided prior to the presentation of the results of dynamic Stokes shift studies. The experimental results on solvation dynamics have been discussed along with theoretical simulation studies. The current understanding of the solvation process in these media, which includes the various timescales and the mechanism of solvation dynamics, is presented to highlight the need and scope for further studies in this area.

Solvation dynamics in imidazolium and phosphonium ionic liquids: Effects of solute motion

Experimental and simulation results of solvation dynamics in ionic liquids have so far been explained in terms of translational motion of the ions constituting the ionic liquids under investigation. A recent theoretical study [Kashyap & Biswas, J Phys Chem B, 114 (2010) 254] has indicated that while translational motion of the constituent ions is indeed responsible for Stokes’ shift dynamics of...

Ultrafast solvation dynamics of coumarin 153 in imidazolium-based ionic liquids.

The dynamic Stokes shift of coumarin 153 has been measured in two room-temperature ionic liquids, 1-(3-cyanopropyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, using the fluorescence up-conversion technique with a 230 fs instrumental response function. A component of about 10-15% of the total solvation shift is found to take place on...

Ultrafast solvation response in room temperature ionic liquids: possible origin and importance of the collective and the nearest neighbour solvent modes.

Recent three-pulse photon echo peak shift (3PEPS) measurements [M. Muramatsu, Y. Nagasawa, and H. Miyasaka, J. Phys. Chem. A 115, 3886 (2011)] with several room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have revealed multi-exponential dynamics with ultrafast solvation timescale in the range, 20 < τ(1)∕fs < 250, for both imidazolium and phosphonium RTILs. This is striking for two reasons: (i) the timesc...

Solvation dynamics of room-temperature ionic liquids: evidence for collective solvent motion on sub-picosecond timescales

Little is known about the microscopic mechanism of solvation dynamics in room-temperature ionic liquids, but experimental studies have found that the solvent response has both sub-picosecond and nanosecond timescale components. We present the results of molecular dynamics calculations of the time-resolved fluorescence response of a chromophore in an ionic liquid, and analyze the solute–solvent ...

Effect of room temperature ionic liquids on femtosecond solvation dynamics in a triblock copolymer (P123) gel

Effect of two room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL, [pmim][Br] and [pmim][BF4]) on the solvation dynamics and anisotropy decay of coumarin 480 (C480) in P123 gel has been studied using femtosecond up-conversion. In P123 gel, C480 displays a significant excitation wavelength dependence of emission maximum (red edge excitation shift, REES of 18 nm) and solvation dynamics, which suggest heterogene...
