چکیده

Comparative genotype and toxin interactions at three polymorphic enzyme loci were examined in a laboratory population of amphipods (Hyalella azteca) during acute exposure to cadmium, zinc, copper, lead, or low pH. Significant toxin-genotype interactions were observed using logistic regression to model mortality in ten of 15 analyses. Both stressor-specific and nonspecific modes of selection were observed. In general, low pH selected for different genotypes than those selected by metals, especially zinc. Different modes of selection were also observed when amphipods were exposed to different metals. These results suggest that exposure to low pH would significantly reduce the ability of H. azteca to survive subsequent contamination by metals; exposure to stressors in the reverse order would also compromise a population’s chance of survival. A genetic distance analysis showed that the magnitude of genetic differentiation consistently increased among survivors compared with that of the initial populations. These increases in genetic divergence estimates suggest that acute exposure to metals or low pH may have an evolutionarily significant impact on the species. They also suggest that both genotype frequency and genetic distance measures (based on allozyme data) may be used as bioindicators for environmental monitoring programs. Validation of such bioindicators requires an understanding of the population’s genetic background, genetic structure, and history. Keywords—Allozyme analysis Mortality Genetic distance Amphipods

Phytoremediation Efficacy of Salix discolor and S. eriocephela on Adjacent Acidic Clay and Shale Overburden on a Former Mine Site: Growth, Soil, and Foliage Traits

Plants regularly experience suboptimal environments, but this can be particularly acute on highly-disturbed mine sites. Two North American willows—Salix discolor Muhl. (DIS) and S. eriocephala Michx. (ERI)—were established in common-garden field tests on two adjacent coal mine spoil sites: one with high clay content, the other with shale overburden. The high clay content site had 44% less produ...

Different survival of chromium-exposed Oxya chinensis among allozyme genotypes.

The goal of the present study was to compare the different survival of Oxya chinensis exposed to chromium(VI) among allozyme genotypes to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the genetic variations and environmental disturbance. This study analyzed the occurrence of genotypes in O. chinensis population exposed to Cr(VI). O. chinensis samples were collected at Yuanping, Shanxi...

Preponderance of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T homozygosity among leukemia patients intolerant to methotrexate.

BACKGROUND Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism, a common mutation of the gene encoding the enzyme that catalyzes reduction of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, a carbon donor in the metabolism of folate, determines a striking reduction in the enzyme activity in carriers of mutation at homozygous status. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospective...

Association of TPMT (rs1800460) Gene Polymorphism with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in a Population from Guilan, Iran

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant transformation and proliferation of lymphoid progenitor cells in bone marrow and blood, which is mainly found in children. Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is a thiopurine drug metabolizer enzyme that is prescribed for the treatment of ALL. Several single nucleotide polymorphisms in the TPMT gene have been reported to be associated with the d...
