چکیده

In a scalable server that supports the retrieval and display of continuous media audio and video clips both the number of simultaneous displays and the expected startup latency of a dis play increases as a function of additional disk bandwidth This paper describes object replication and request migration as two alternative techniques to minimize startup latency In addition to developing analytical models for these two techniques we report on their implementation using a scalable server The results obtained from both the analytical models and the experimental system demonstrate the e ectiveness of the proposed techniques

Medusa: A Novel Stream-Scheduling Scheme for Parallel Video Servers

Parallel video servers provide highly scalable video-on-demand service for a huge number of clients. The conventional streamscheduling scheme does not use I/O and network bandwidth efficiently. Some other schemes, such as batching and streammerging, can effectively improve server I/O and network bandwidth efficiency. However, the batching scheme results in long startup latency and high reneging...

On Evaluating the Cost-Performance Characteristics of Disk Storage Systems Supporting Continuous Media

Disk based storage systems serving continuous media content are evaluated using metrics such as startup latency, buffer size, and the number of concurrent streams. The design of a practical system must evaluate the tradeoffs among these parameters to achieve a target system performance while minimizing operational costs. In this paper, we describe a generic model that can be used for characteri...

Search-based buffer management policies for streaming in continuous media servers

In this paper we propose an efficient buffer prefetching and replacement policies for continuous-media servers that support content-based search and retrieval. The new policies are based on the knowledge collected from the content-based search manager and the streaming manager. We show that by integrating the knowledge from the search and streaming components, we can achieve better caching of m...

Hierarchical Caching and Prefetching for High Performance Continuous Media Servers with Smart Disks

The rapidly emerging smart disk technology introduces additional resources in a computer system (such as embedded drive-level caches and powerful controllers) the parallel exploitation of which can drastically improve the performance of applications. This paper contributes algorithms which exploit these resources to improve the performance of continuous media servers. Performance is measured in...
