Design of the Muon Collider Lattice: Present Status
نویسنده
چکیده
The last component of a muon collider facility, as presently envisioned[1], is a colliding-beam storage ring. Design studies on various problems for this ring have been in progress over the past year[2]. In this paper we discuss the current status of the design. The projected muon currents require very low beta values at the IP, β∗ = 3mm, in order to achieve the design luminosity of L = 10 cm−2 s−1. The beta values in the final-focus quadrupoles are roughly 400 km. To cancel the corresponding chromaticities, sextupole schemes for local correction have been included in the optics of the experimental insertion[3]. The hourglass effect constraints the bunch length to be comparable to β∗. To obtain such short bunches with reasonable rf voltage requires a very small value of the momentum compaction α, which can be obtained by using flexible momentum compaction (FMC) modules in the arcs[4]. A preliminary design of a complete collider ring has now been made; it uses an experimental insertion and arc modules as described in refs.[2]-[4] as well as a utility insertion. The layout of this ring is shown schematically in Fig.1, and its parameters are summarized in Tb.1. Though some engineering features are unrealistic, and the beam performance needs some imFigure 1. Ffag Lattice for Muon Acceleration with Distributed Rf*
A future muon collider or neutrino factory requires fast acceleration to minimize muon decay. We have previously described an FFAG ring that accelerated muons from 10 to 20 GeV in energy. The ring achieved its large momentum acceptance using a low-emittance lattice with a small dispersion. In this paper, we present an update on that ring. We have used design tools that more accurately represent...
متن کاملStatus of the Proton Driver Study at Fermilab
In order to enhance Fermilab hadron research program and to provide a proton source to a future muon storage ring or a muon collider, the study of a new high intensity proton machine called the Proton Driver is being pursued at Fermilab. It would replace the present linac and 8 GeV Booster and produce 20 times the proton intensity as the Booster. This paper gives a status report on a number of ...

متن کاملMuon Colliders: New Prospects for Precision Physics and the High Energy Frontier
An overview is given of muon collider technology and of the current status of the muon collider research program. The exciting potential of muon colliders for both neutrino physics and collider physics studies is then described and illustrated using self-consistent collider parameter sets at 0.1 TeV to 100 TeV center-of-mass energies.
متن کاملStatus Report of a High Luminosity Muon Collider and Future Research and Development Plans
Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV (c-of-m) high luminosity μμ colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton ...
