An Ideal Observer Model of Visual Short-Term Memory Predicts Human Capacity - Precision Tradeoffs

چکیده
We develop an ideal observer model of human visual shortterm memory. Compared to previous models that have posited constraints on memory performance intended solely to account for observed phenomena, in the present research we derive the expected behavior of an optimally performing, but limited-capacity memory system. We develop our model using rate–distortion theory, a branch of information theory that provides optimal bounds on the accuracy of information transmission subject to a fixed capacity. The resulting model provides a task-independent and theoretically motivated definition of visual memory capacity and yields novel predictions regarding human performance. These predictions are quantitatively evaluated in an empirical study. We also demonstrate that our ideal observer model encompasses two existing, but competing accounts of VSTM as special cases.

An ideal observer analysis of visual working memory.
Limits in visual working memory (VWM) strongly constrain human performance across many tasks. However, the nature of these limits is not well understood. In this article we develop an ideal observer analysis of human VWM by deriving the expected behavior of an optimally performing but limited-capacity memory system. This analysis is framed around rate-distortion theory, a branch of information ...
متن کاملHuman short-term spatial memory: precision predicts capacity.
Here, we aimed to determine the capacity of human short-term memory for allocentric spatial information in a real-world setting. Young adults were tested on their ability to learn, on a trial-unique basis, and remember over a 1-min interval the location(s) of 1, 3, 5, or 7 illuminating pads, among 23 pads distributed in a 4m×4m arena surrounded by curtains on three sides. Participants had to wa...

متن کاملPlacing a Lower Bound on Transsaccadic Memory Capacity Using Visual Search.
Making eye-movements provides us with visual samples of the world that must be integrated to produce a coherent percept of the visual world. Transsaccadic Memory (TSM) is necessary for storing samples from previous fixations so they can be integrated with the current one. Visual search tasks place greater demands on TSM than change-detection since visual search often requires integration of mul...

Introduction: Psychomotor performance task is used to assess the arousal and cognitive functions of the central nervous system. Alternatively, human visual working memory reflects the capability of the individual’s short-term memory. Psycho-mental stimuli are linked to the stimulation of Malondialdehyde (MDA) formations. Citicoline is a nootropic nucleotide agent with a favorable effect on the ...
