چکیده

Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs) are already widely used in rotating machinery and continue to gain popularity due to the ever-present push to higher rotational speeds and decreasing prices of associated electronic components. They offer several advantages over conventional mechanical bearings including non-contact rotor support (thus eliminating mechanical wear and the need for lubricants), ability to tune bearing parameters through software for optimum machine performance, remote monitoring and health diagnostic, etc. In some applications, such as in a vacuum or in aggressive environments, they are often the only viable solution. An electromagnetic actuator, along with a position sensor and control electronics, is a key component of AMBs. While there is a variety of actuator designs described in the literature, most of the AMBs built commercially use heteropolar radial electrical actuators in combination with a dedicated electrically-biased axial actuators. On the contrary, since its inception in 1998, Calnetix Technologies mainly uses homopolar permanent magnet (PM)-biased radial actuators along with a homopolar PM-biased combination radial/axial actuators. In this paper, we provide an overview of the research we have done over the last 15 years in this area focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of this approach and explaining why we have made certain design choices.

Study of Permanent Magnet Bearings and their Stiffness

A typical passive magnetic bearing has been modeled and analyzed for its performance characteristics. The magnetic bearing studied in this work comprised of a Shaft, inner magnets sleeved over the shaft, and outer magnetic rings. A detailed analysis has been perform on the force exerted by a permanent magnet on the shaft nurture to restore the shaft to its equilibrium position when an eccentric...

Actuators for Active Magnetic Bearings

The literature of active magnetic bearing (AMB) technology dates back to at least 1937 when the earliest work that clearly describes an active magnetic bearing system was published by Jesse Beams [1]. Progress on the technology was modest until the late 1970s, when commercial development began to emerge as, for instance, described by Haberman and Liard in 1977 [2]. The state of the art in 1988 ...

Combination Radial-axial Magnetic Bearing

The design and application of a patented active actuator design that combines the radial and axial actuator into one combination radial-axial actuator is presented. The theory of operation of the actuator is defined and magnetic finite element analysis modeling shown verifying operation. Its mechanical construction is then presented to show how this actuator configuration is successfully integr...

A miniature milling spindle with Active Magnetic Bearings

This paper describes the design and realization of a miniature milling spindle with Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs). Permanent magnet biased, reluctance type actuators position the rotor in five Degrees of Freedom (DOF), leaving the rotation unconstrained. A rotordynamic model was developed to expedite the controller design, and enabled modeling of the spindle’s performance under the influence ...
