چکیده

C first walnut trees and orchards were planted during the Spanish mission period (around 1800), using seedlings of early varieties of Persian or English walnut (Juglans regia) chosen for their superior growth and nut quality. Since the 1890s, walnut trees in California have been propagated by grafting or budding desired cultivars onto rootstocks chosen for their adaptation to different physical, chemical or biological soil conditions at individual orchard sites. From the early to mid20th century, seedlings of Northern California black walnut (Juglans hindsii) were used as rootstocks because they grew vigorously and were more tolerant of saline and saturated soil and more resistant to soil-borne pests than English walnut seedlings. Since the 1950s, ‘Paradox’ hybrid seedlings have supplanted black and English walnut as rootstocks of choice for California orchards, though black walnut (J. hindsii and others) is still RESEARCH ARTICLE

BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO THE BLAcnINE VIllUS: INCREASING THE SPEED AND EFFICIENCY OF TRADITIONAL BACKCROSSINGBY INTEGRATING KOLECULAllTECHNIQUES

Walnut blackline disease caused by the cherry leafroll virus (CLRV) causes fatal necrosis at the union between English walnut scions and hypersensitive rootstocks. All English walnut cultivars tested so far are susceptible to blackline girdling. A breeding program for developing a blackline resistant Englishwalnut cultivarwas begun in 1983. The time requiredto breed an English walnut cultivar t...

Genomic and Horticultural Approaches to Manage Blackline Disease in Walnuts

This multiyear project is aimed at developing a practical solution to managing blackline disease of walnuts in California orchards. Blackline disease in English walnuts is caused by a Cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV) infection of English walnuts (Juglans regia) grafted on black walnuts (J. hindsii) and ‘Paradox’ hybrid (J. hindsii x J. regia) rootstocks. The HR is due to the resistance of black wa...

Determining Phytophthora Resistance in Elite Paradox Clones and Specific Etiology of a Paradox Crown and Root Rot

The objectives of this research are: (1) to evaluate elite Paradox hybrid clones for resistance to Phytophthora citricola, a virulent and prevalent crown and root pathogen affecting California walnuts and (2) to determine specific etiology of a root and crown rot problem in upper Sacramento Valley orchards on Paradox walnut rootstock. Two screens for resistance to P. citricola were completed in...

VX211, a vigorous new walnut hybrid clone with nematode tolerance and a useful resistance mechanism.

VX211 is a highly vigorous Paradox hybrid clone that outgrew other walnut seedlings in the presence of nematodes. A four-year macroplot trial involving Paradox VX211 and a standard Paradox selection, AX1, demonstrated that the damage threshold level of Pratylenchus vulnus on commercially available walnut rootstocks is < 1 nematode/250 cm³ of soil. Using 1 as the initial population level (Pi) wi...
