How Evolution Shapes the Way Roboticists Think

چکیده
Interdisciplinary research in the 21st century is characterized by bidirectional flows: one domain provides inspiration to another, which, after an advance, provides inspiration back to the donating domain. In this abstract I outline three such flows between the domains of evolutionary biology and robotics. First, biological evolution shapes all aspects of an organism’s body and brain simultaneously. This led to work in which artificial evolution optimizes the morphology and neural control of robots such that they perform increasingly sophisticated tasks. Second, evolution causes change over evolutionary time, but also over the lifetime of the organism. This led to work in which virtual robots change body plans as they evolve to perform more complex tasks, but their bodies also change as they perform those tasks. Finally, evolution always works on populations. This led to work in which populations of humans collaborate and compete to evolve increasingly sophisticated robots. © Selection and peer-review under responsibility of FET11 conference organizers and published by Elsevier B.V.

Cog as a thought experiment
In her presentation at the Monte Verità workshop, Maja Mataric showed us a videotape of her robots cruising together through the lab, and remarked, aptly: "They're flocking, but that's not what they think they're doing." This is a vivid instance of a phenomenon that lies at the heart of all the research I learned about at Monte Verità: the execution of surprisingly successful "cognitive" behavi...

was revived with the emergence of cognitive ethology. And the cycle of excess is being repeated, I think. All animals are proving to be really, really clever, and, more remarkably, in very human-like ways. Hmmm. That's not a very interesting kind of evolution. And I wonder if a lot of the results we're getting don't have more to do with the way we're conceptualizing the problems we put to anima...

Lencucha and Thow have highlighted the way in which neo-liberalism is enshrined within institutional mechanisms and conditions the policy environment to shape public policy on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). They critique the strong (but important) focus of public health policy research on corporate interests and influence over NCD policy, and point toward neo-liberal...

By this time there has been a trend in the direction of devolvement in governance and planning. This trend presents a role for inhabitants, a considerable lot of whom have found an opportunity to express their interests for self-assurance; struggling that current governance structures do not satisfactorily outfit their needs and interests. As planning is inseparably connected to power, this fea...

66 AI MAGAZINE Robots, and therefore roboticists, have been a part of the agents community from its auspicious beginnings in the Autonomous Agents series of conferences, and continuing with the merger into the Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) conferences. Today, there is a resurgent interest and recognition of the importance of robotics research framed within areas of research f...
