Emission Mechanisms in X-Ray Faint Galaxies

چکیده
Hot gas dominates the emission in X-ray luminous early-type galaxies, but in relatively X-ray faint systems, integrated X-ray emission from discrete stellar-like sources is thought to be considerable, although the amount of the contribution is controversial. To help resolve this issue, we examine the radial X-ray surface brightness distribution of 17 X-ray faint galaxies observed with the ROSAT HRI and PSPC. We assume that the stellar contribution follows a de Vaucouleurs law while the hot gas component follows a King β model. For some galaxies, both models fit equally well, but for a number of systems, a dual component model yields the best fit, from which, upper bounds are placed on the stellar contribution. Best-fit values for the stellar contribution are inconsistent with (lower than) that suggested by Fabbiano, Gioia, & Trinchieri (1989) and estimated from the bulge of M31, but are consistent with the Forman, Jones, & Tucker (1985) estimate of the stellar fraction in X-ray faint elliptical and S0 galaxies. Our results indicate an upper limit to discrete sources of LX/LB = 1.6× 10 29 ergs s/L⊙. ROSAT X-ray Colors and Emission Mechanisms in Early-Type Galaxies
The X-ray colors and X-ray–to–optical luminosity ratios (LX/LB) of 61 early-type galaxies observed with the ROSAT PSPC are determined. The colors indicate that the X-ray spectral properties of galaxies vary as a function of LX/LB. The brightest X-ray galaxies have colors consistent with thermal emission from hot gas with roughly the same metallicity of 50% solar. The spatial variation of the co...

We analyze samples of nearby clusters taken from the Abell catalog and the Xray Sample of Bright Clusters (De Grandi et al 1999) including a wide range of Xray luminosities. Using the usually adopted background subtraction procedures, we find that galaxies in clusters selected by means of their X-ray emission show a flat luminosity function (faint end slope α ≃ −1.1) consistent with that derive...
متن کاملCross - correlation of the unresolved X - ray background with faint galaxies
At the faint end of the deepest X-ray surveys, a population of X-ray luminous galaxies is seen. In this paper, we present the results of a cross-correlation between the residual, unresolved X-ray photons in a very deep X-ray survey and the positions of faint galaxies, in order to examine the importance of these objects at even fainter flux levels. We measure a significant correlation on all ang...
متن کاملA Survey of hard spectrum ROSAT sources 2: optical identification of hard sources
We have surveyed 188 ROSATPSPC fields for X–ray sources with hard spectra (α < 0.5); such sources must be major contributors to the X–ray background at faint fluxes. In this paper we present optical identifications for 62 of these sources: 28 AGN which show broad lines in their optical spectra (BLAGN), 13 narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs), 5 galaxies with no visible emission lines, 8 cluste...

About 45% of the point sources detected in the 2 Ms Chandra exposure of the HDF-N can be matched with moderately bright galaxies with z < 1.4 that have been studied by the Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey. Although the optical spectra of these galaxies appear normal, based on their X-ray properties ∼20% of them appear to contain weak AGNs. More than 90% of the X-ray photons detected by Chan...
