Non-variceal Upper Gi Bleeding

چکیده
Introduction In the United States, there are 250,000-300,000 hospital admissions and 15,000-30,000 deaths each year resulting from acute non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding NVUGIB.1 Peptic ulcer disease is the most prevalent source of NVUGIB accounting for 50% of all cases. The incidence of NVUGIB ranges from 48-160 cases per 100,000 adults yearly. Recent data suggest the mortality from NVUGIB may be improving to 2.4-5% while the hospitalization rate has decreased from 78.4/100,00 population to 60.6/100,000,2-4 which may be explained, in part, by better risk stratification and advances in periendoscopic medical management and endoscopic approaches.

Absence of Helicobacter pylori is not protective against peptic ulcer bleeding in elderly on offending agents: lessons from an exceptionally low prevalence population
Aim. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is exceptionally rare in population from the north-eastern region of Peninsular Malaysia. This provides us an opportunity to contemplate the future without H. pylori in acute non-variceal upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Methods. All cases in the GI registry with GI bleeding between 2003 and 2006 were reviewed. Cases with confirmed non-varicea...

BACKGROUND/AIMS Variceal rupture is one of the main causes of mortality in cirrhotic patients. However, there are limited data on the long-term outcomes of variceal bleeding. METHODS We investigated the incidence and mortality of variceal bleeding at three endoscopic centers in Gangwon province during 3 periods (August 1996 to July 1997, August 2001 to July 2002, and August 2006 to July 2007)...

متن کاملDuodenal variceal bleed: an unusual cause of upper gastrointestinal bleed and a difficult diagnosis to make
We present a case of recurrent upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in a man aged 57 years with primary biliary cholangitis who was ultimately diagnosed with an isolated duodenal variceal bleed, which was successfully treated with histoacryl glue injection. Duodenal varices are an uncommon presentation of portal hypertension and can result in significant GI bleeding with a high mortality. Diagn...
متن کاملThe management of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Acute upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is one of the most common medical emergencies and most cases require urgent medical assessment. Half of all cases are due to peptic ulcer and this article focuses on non-variceal bleeding. The priority, following emergency hospital admission, is to support the circulation of the shocked patient rather than to identify the source of bleeding. After resu...
