چکیده

Low-content (<0.6 at.%) gold-ceria samples were prepared by one-pot synthesis by the urea gelation/co-precipitation method, and by sodium cyanide leaching of high-content (5 at.%) gold-ceria materials prepared by deposition–precipitation. These catalysts, containing cationic gold in ceria, are active for both the low-temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction and the preferential oxidation of CO (PROX). The surface oxygen of ceria, as estimated by H2-TPR, was used to normalize the WGS reaction rates. Cyclic temperature-programmed reduction with intermittent reoxidation showed that the surface structures of gold-ceria catalysts are highly reversible. Considerable reoxidation by oxygen or H2O can occur even at ambient conditions. The stability of low-content gold-ceria catalysts for the PROX reaction in a realistic fuel gas mixture containing 1% CO–0.5% O2–50% H2–10% H2O–15% CO2–He was excellent. No drop in activity or selectivity was found in cyclic operation up to 150 8C. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Activity and stability of low-content gold–cerium oxide catalysts for the water–gas shift reaction

We report here on the high activity and stability of low-content gold–cerium oxide catalysts for the water–gas shift reaction (WGS). These catalysts are reversible in cyclic reduction–oxidation treatment up to 400 8C, are non-pyrophoric, and are thus potential candidates for application to hydrogen generation for fuel cell power production. Low-content (0.2–0.9 at.%) gold–ceria samples were pre...

A Review on Preferential Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide in Hydrogen Rich Gases

In this review, recent works on the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in hydrogen rich gases for fuel cell applications are summarized. H2 is used as a fuel for polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). It is produced by reforming of natural gas or liquid fuels followed by water gas shift reaction. The produced gas consists of H2, CO, and CO2. In which CO content is around 1%, whi...

Effect of platinum on Ceria supported Cu catalysts for PrOx process in fuel processors

The CO preferential oxidation (PrOx) is one of the critical steps in hydrogen production and purification for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). This reaction was investigated in the presence of excess hydrogen over Cu/CeO2, Pt/CeO2 and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalysts. The ceria supports was prepared via precipitation method and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalyst was synthesized by sequential impregnation o...

Comparison of the activity of Au/CeO2 and Au/Fe2O3 catalysts for the CO oxidation and the water-gas shift reactions

We compare the activity and relevant gold species of nanostructured gold–cerium oxide and gold–iron oxide catalysts for the CO oxidation by dioxygen and water. Well dispersed gold nanoparticles in reduced form provide the active sites for the CO oxidation reaction on both oxide supports. On the other hand, oxidized gold species, strongly bound on the support catalyze the water-gas shift reactio...

Shape and Crystal-Plane Effects of Nanoscale Ceria on the Activity of Au-CeO2 Catalysts for the Water-Gas Shift ReactionGrant support from the DOE/BES-Hydrogen Fuel Initiative program (DE-FG02-05ER15730) and the NSF-NIRT program (grant 0304515) is gratefully acknowledged

The water–gas shift (WGS) reaction (CO+H2OQCO2+H2) plays an important role in fuel processing for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel-cell applications. The hydrogen in the reformate gas is upgraded by removal of the carbon monoxide, which is a strong poison of the anode catalysts in current PEM fuel cells. Active shift catalysts that are also stable under the operating conditions of practi...
