چکیده

Supplementary Figure 1. Stimuli and percepts. (a) Temporal sequence of visual stimuli presented during the rivalry experiment. (b) Example of the temporal sequence of visual stimuli presented during the replay experiment. (c) Example of the temporal sequence of an observer’s perceptual experience during both the rivalry and replay experiments. The particular sequence shown here depicts a case in which a perceptual wave propagated all the way to the bottom of the annulus in the right hemifield but no further than the horizontal meridian of the left hemifield. Note that perceptual travelling waves occurred during rivalry even though there were no wave-like changes in the stimulus itself during rivalry.

Callosal Connections of Primary Visual Cortex Predict the Spatial Spreading of Binocular Rivalry Across the Visual Hemifields

In binocular rivalry, presentation of different images to the separate eyes leads to conscious perception alternating between the two possible interpretations every few seconds. During perceptual transitions, a stimulus emerging into dominance can spread in a wave-like manner across the visual field. These traveling waves of rivalry dominance have been successfully related to the cortical magni...

During binocular rivalry, physical stimulation is dissociated from conscious visual awareness. Human brain imaging reveals a tight linkage between the neural events in human primary visual cortex (V1) and the dynamics of perceptual waves during transitions in dominance during binocular rivalry. Here, we report results from experiments in which observers’ attention was diverted from the rival st...

Comparison of stimulus rivalry to binocular rivalry with functional magnetic resonance imaging.

When incompatible images are presented to each eye, a phenomenon known as binocular rivalry occurs in which the viewer's conscious visual perception alternates between the two images. In stimulus rivalry, similar perceptual alternations between rival images can occur even in the midst of fast image swapping between the eyes. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to directly compar...

Predicting the Stream of Consciousness from Activity in Human Visual Cortex

Can the rapid stream of conscious experience be predicted from brain activity alone? Recently, spatial patterns of activity in visual cortex have been successfully used to predict feature-specific stimulus representations for both visible and invisible stimuli. However, because these studies examined only the prediction of static and unchanging perceptual states during extended periods of stimu...
