چکیده
A new solution in closed form is obtained for the thermomechanical deformations of an isotropic linear thermoelastic functionally graded elliptic plate rigidly clamped at the edges. The through-thickness variation of the volume fraction of the ceramic phase in a metal–ceramic plate is assumed to be given by a power-law type function. The effective material properties at a point are computed by the Mori–Tanaka scheme. It is found that the through-thickness distributions of the in-plane displacements and transverse shear stresses in a functionally graded plate do not agree with those assumed in classical and shear deformation plate theories. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper reviews shearography and its applications for testing of composite structures. Shearography is a laser-based technique for fullfield measurement of surface deformation. Unlike holography, it does not require special vibration isolation; hence it can be employed in field/factory environments. The technique has already received considerable industrial acceptance for nondestructive test...

This paper presents a finite element formulation of elasticity to model elastic fracture in composites with long aligned fibers. We have employed a B-bar type approach which is applicable to compressible as well as nearly incompressible material systems. An energy approach is undertaken to evaluate the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. The effects of strong intact bridging fibers, fiber...

ÐThe grain boundary segregation of Bi in dilute polycrystalline Cu±Bi alloys was systematically studied as a function of temperature and composition. The temperature dependencies of the Gibbsian excess of Bi at the grain boundaries exhibited discontinuous changes at the temperatures close to, but dierent from the bulk solidus temperatures. The observed segregational phase transition was interp...

ÐThe eect of hydrogen in solid solution on the edge/screw character of dislocations has been investigated by deforming samples of high-purity aluminum in a gaseous hydrogen environment in situ in a controlled environment transmission electron microscope. Solute hydrogen was found to stabilize edge segments of dislocations, which inhibited, and in some cases stopped dislocations from cross-slip...

ÐThe durability of residually compressed coatings, particularly thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), is governed by events occurring at the interface with the substrate. In general, failure involves the sequential nucleation growth and coalescence of separations in the presence of imperfections and defects. The growth and coalescence phases are analyzed. Remnant ligaments are expected from the mech...
