Assessment of unilateral neglect.

چکیده
U nilateral neglect (ULN) (or “neglect”) is a common behavioral syndrome in patients following stroke. The reported incidence of ULN varies widely from 10%1 to 82%2 following right-hemisphere stroke and from 15%3 to 65%2 following left-hemisphere stroke. Reasons for the variability in the published rates of occurrence of ULN after stroke include subject selection criteria, lesion site, and the nature and timing of the assessment.4 The clinical impression that ULN occurs more frequently following right brain damage than left brain damage has been supported in a systematic review of published data.4 Unilateral neglect is characterized by the failure to report or respond to people or objects presented to the side opposite a brain lesion. If the failure to respond can be accounted for by either sensory or motor deficits, it is not considered to be neglect.5 Patients may have one type of neglect or a combination of neglect behaviors.6 Because ULN has a wide variety of clinical presentations, no single test can be used to identify the disorder in all patients, nor will a single test provide a comprehensive diagnosis of neglect behavior.7 Some authors7,8 have recommended that assessment of neglect include a test battery. To ensure sufficient sensitivity, the battery should include measures for all types of neglect.9

Wheelchair navigation and unilateral neglect: Can the use of technology improve performance?
Following stroke, the deficit of unilateral neglect (also referred to as spatial neglect, hemiinattention and the neglect syndrome, amongst other terms) is associated with poor outcome with affected patients relatively unlikely to relearn to walk (Buxbaum et al., 2004). The outlook for regaining independent mobility is made still worse by the general inability of patients with unilateral neglec...
متن کاملTraining to improve awareness of disabilities in clients with unilateral neglect.
OBJECTIVE Awareness of disabilities is known to be a central problem of rehabilitation among clients with large right cerebrovascular lesions and unilateral neglect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an intervention program focused on improving the awareness of disabilities in four participants with unilateral neglect. The intervention program developed for this study was base...
متن کاملVirtual Environment Training System for Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients with Unilateral Neglect: Crossing the Virtual Street
In this paper, we propose a system for training of stroke patients with unilateral neglect by using technology of virtual reality (VR). The proposed system is designed to compensate for unilateral neglect. This system contains the calibration of unilateral neglect and the training of this disease. The calibration procedure is implemented by aligning the virtual object at a subjective middle lin...

متن کاملUses of Virtual Reality for Diagnosis, Rehabilitation and Study of Unilateral Spatial Neglect: Review and Analysis
Unilateral spatial neglect is a disabling condition frequently occurring after stroke. People with neglect suffer from various spatial deficits in several modalities, which in many cases impair everyday functioning. A successful treatment is yet to be found. Several techniques have been proposed in the last decades, but only a few showed long-lasting effects and none could completely rehabilita...
