Improvement of BitTorrent Performance and Inter-domain Traffic by Inserting ISP-Owned Peers

چکیده
Large volumes of Internet traffic are nowadays generated by BitTorrent. In this article, we propose the insertion of high-bandwidth ISPowned peers as an optimization approach to improve end-users’ performance and reduce inter-domain traffic. An ISP-owned peer participates in BitTorrent swarms in order to download chunks and subsequently serve regular peers. We have run simulations on the ns-2 platform showing that our approach results in considerable reduction of both inter-domain traffic and the downloading times of users. We also show that the insertion of an ISP-owned peer can complement effectively the use of locality awareness, and lead to further performance improvements.

Pushing BitTorrent Locality to the Limit
Peer-to-peer (P2P) locality has recently raised a lot of interest in the community. Indeed, whereas P2P content distribution enables financial savings for the content providers, it dramatically increases the traffic on inter-ISP links. To solve this issue, the idea to keep a fraction of the P2P traffic local to each ISP was introduced a few years ago. Since then, P2P solutions exploiting locali...

In recent years BitTorrent has become a notorious contributor to Internet traffic. Not only is BitTorrent responsible for over one third of all Internet traffic, but an immoderate amount of it is expensive cross-ISP or even inter-continental traffic. Much of BitTorrent’s long-distance traffic is due to its random selection of peers, which can cause connected peers to be at very different locati...
متن کاملEnhancing Traffic Locality in BitTorrent via Shared Trackers
The fast-growing traffic of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, most notably BitTorrent, is putting unprecedented pressure to Internet Service Providers (ISPs). P2P locality has therefore been widely suggested to mitigate the costly inter-ISP traffic. In this paper, we find that even in the most popular ASes (Autonomous Systems), very few individual torrents are able to form large enough local clu...

The emerging Peer-to-Peer (P2P) model has become a very popular paradigm for developing Internet-scale systems. The BitTorrent is an example of P2P system for sharing resources, including files and documents. Owing to the peer does not have the capability of locality aware, it cannot differentiate its neighbors belong to which Internet Service Provider (ISP), file sharing results in a large num...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of the Advanced Network Tracker for BitTorrent
BitTorrent, a popular Peer-to-Peer (P2P) protocol, has recently engendered considerable controversy. Many P2P applications implement a variant of the protocol due to its cost-effective scalability. However, for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) the protocol is notorious for its high network cost. To reduce these costs, ISPs have deployed network devices to detect and throttle BitTorrent traffic...
