Cystic Ovarian Disease and Thyroid Hormones in Dairy Cattle
نویسنده
چکیده
Ovarian cysts reduce reproductive efficiency on almost every dairy farm in the World. Cystic ovarian disease in cows is usually seen in the first two months post calving. Ovarian cysts are characterized as structures greater than 2.5cm in diameter remaining on an ovary for more than 10 days. Cysts are simply filled with fluid enclosed by membranes like grapes. Since ovarian cysts reduce reproductive efficiency as well as milk production, most dairy farms have very large economic losses.

Effect of Administration of an Opioid Antagonist (Naloxane) to Treat Ovarian Cysts in Dairy Cows
The role of stress in the pathogenesis of ovarian cysts is believed to be mediated by the discharge of endogenous cortisol, which inhibits LH release. Endogenous opioid peptides are involved in many responses to stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of epidural administration of Naloxone (NX) on cystic regression and follicle development leading to normal oestrus ...
متن کاملEffect of Metabolic Stress on Ovarian Activity and Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cattle: A Review
Reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle has been decreased over the last 5 decades despite significant gains in genetic selection, improved reproductive technologies and nutritional care. In high-yielding dairy cattle, the negative energy balance (NEB) during the first week post-partum adversely affects ovarian activity, mainly follicle growth and steroidogenesis. Circulating levels of non-este...

Health traits are of increasing importance to dairy producers. In the Scandinavian countries, direct selection for improved disease resistance has been carried out for more than 30 years (Philipsson and Lindhé, 2003). In these countries, veterinary treatments are recorded, as all treatments involving antibiotics and hormones have to be made primarily by a veterinarian. As veterinarians have ext...

After briefly introducing the basec steps in production and metabolism of thyroid hormones, the author gives an overview of nutritional, metabolic and disease related factors and endocrine interactions influencing thyroid gland function in ruminants, particularly in the postpartum dairy cow. Involvement of thyroid hormonal regulation of seasonal patterns of reproduction as well as ovarian endoc...
متن کاملHashimoto's disease in a bilateral benign cystic ovarian teratoma: a case report.
A wide array of tissues derived from all the three germinal layers is seen in ovarian teratomas. Among these, thyroid tissue is present in 10% cases of all mature cystic teratomas. We report this case of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in a clinically euthyroid patient who tested positive for antithyroid peroxidase antibodies in spite of normal thyroid hormone profile. While the histological features o...
