A 4 3-competitive randomised algorithm for online scheduling of packets with agreeable deadlines

چکیده
In 2005 Li et al. gave a φ-competitive deterministic online algorithm for scheduling of packets with agreeable deadlines [12] with a very interesting analysis. This is known to be optimal due to a lower bound by Hajek [7]. We claim that the algorithm by Li et al. can be slightly simplified, while retaining its competitive ratio. Then we introduce randomness to the modified algorithm and argue that the competitive ratio against oblivious adversary is at most 4 3 . Note that this still leaves a gap between the best known lower bound of 5 4 by Chin et al. [5] for randomised algorithms against oblivious adversary.

متن کاملAn Empirical Study of Online Packet Scheduling Algorithms
This work studies online scheduling algorithms for buffer management, develops new algorithms, and analyzes their performances. Packets arrive at a release time r, with a non-negative weight w and an integer deadline d. At each time step, at most one packet is scheduled. The modified greedy (MG) algorithm is 1.618-competitive for the objective of maximizing the sum of weights of packets sent, a...
متن کاملRandomised Buffer Management with Bounded Delay against Adaptive Adversary
We study the Buffer Management with Bounded Delay problem, introduced by Kesselman et al. [4], or, in the standard scheduling terminology, the problem of online scheduling of unit jobs to maximise weighted throughput. The adaptive-online adversary model for this problem has recently been studied by Bieńkowski et al. [2], who proved a lower bound of 4 3 on the competitive ratio and provided a ma...
متن کاملRandomized competitive algorithms for online buffer management in the adaptive adversary model
In the problem of buffer management with bounded delay, packets with weights and deadlines arrive at a network switch over time, and the goal is to send those packets on the outgoing link while maximizing the total weight of the packets that are sent before their deadlines. We present a study of randomized algorithms that are competitive against an adaptive adversary. Previous studies considere...
